What VPN provider do you use? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yooshnc · 2023-10-22 02:10 Hi! So I have had surfshark for a while and been generally quite satisfied. They do everything I need them to do this far with no fuss and bundle in some handy other services as well. My annual plan expires in a couple of months and I'm curious what else is out there, as I only started SF because it was heavily discounted at the time. From a new provider, I just need privacy, the ability to torrent totally public domain content, and a static IP. Do you have any suggestions for other options worth considering? I just like to have options. AFAIK, the bittorrent protocol has no NAT traversal techniques (Assuming IPv4 only) so if neither you or the peer have a publicly accessible port, then communication isn't possible. So if you've got a ton of torrents seeding at once, then it's likely that there's just a lot of people in your peer pools that have a forwarded port. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lostllama2015 · 2023-10-22 06:28 I use my home router as a VPN server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Azelphur · 2023-10-22 06:29 Mullvad are bad for torrenting now as they dropped support for port forwarding. Using their app on my Win11 desktop, I often see messages on Reddit and elsewhere that I've never seen before about "no internet". It also seems like responses are delayed and sometimes my screen just remains blank after clicking on a link. I've never experienced any of that before switching to PIA. And perhaps the biggest gripe, I intended to use PIA with Wireguard on my NAS but after much searching, I cannot find anywhere that PIA releases their WG keys. So I can use WG on my Win11 app but not on the NAS. Oh, and port forwarding? Yeah, apparently that has to be 'renewed' periodically so that too, is a PITA on the NAS. Luckily I'm still within the 30 day refund window, just have to figure out where to go next. Maybe AirVPN. Why would you use a VPN ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElementalCyclone · 2023-10-22 17:05 IMO, you are seeing the VPN service not in its intended way. VPN is not supposed to provide you with publicly accessible, reliably static IP, it supposed to hides your traffic, obfuscate it along with the rest of their clients traffic so no one in the world knows which traffic belongs to who. I would suggest that you do not use a static IP for torrenting, having a static IP that always associated to you all the time used for 'torrenting' would makes them put a crosshair on you, pretty fast and very confidently, and ultimately, viciously (because they now have a ground). So what you can do ? I have a following example, this can be applicable both in PC and server environment. You have your static IP, not from the VPN. You also have your VPN. Attach your IP to your machine/VPS/VM, have it also run the VPN. Most known VPN protocols generate a virtual network interface for its 'connection'. You can set your torrent client to bind to this interface, thus making it only send/receive data strictly through your VPN. Your VPN traffic of course will course along your static IP traffic, but worry not it is perfectly "tunnelled" through the VPN's server first before actually 'hits' the internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AmbitiousHornet · 2023-10-22 17:19 ExpressVPN and I've got it running on my router, which makes things really simple for the rest of the network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yooshnc · 2023-10-22 17:37 You are an incredible specimen, this is exactly the sort of feedback I was looking for. The "peers" you're talking about, are they from your own house? I'm really confused. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Azelphur · 2023-10-25 06:59 I can try, perhaps a few definitions first: Peer - When you use torrents, you connect to peers (as in, other people) to download or upload a file, this is called peer to peer, as in, a peer connects to a peer. Seeders and leechers are peers. Port forward - By default, when you use a VPN, all incoming connections will be blocked. Think of it like having a phone where you can only make calls, but not receive calls. If you want to speak to someone, you must call them. What this means in practice, is if two people who are using torrents do not have a port forward, it's like two phones where both can only make calls but not receive them. Neither person can talk to anyone. So when you are torrenting, not having a port forward reduces the number of peers you can connect to, which negatively impacts download and upload speeds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShoeShowShoe · 2023-10-25 20:25 Thank you so much for taking the time. So "Port forward" in the context of a VPN is the ability to upload in peer to peer. That's why I was confused. Usually Port Forward is in the context of a LAN network/router context. If you are torrenting with a VPN, then the VPN provider needs to forward a port, as peers would try to connect to the VPN servers IP address, they'd get the VPN services router, and without a port the VPN services router wouldn't know which device (from all the devices currently connected to that VPN) to forward the connection to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VersionMoist8167 · 2023-11-28 15:20 "I'm setting up a self-hosted server. Before AirVPN I used tailscale to stream Plex remotely which worked fine. Now Plex goes through AirVPN and because of poor upload speeds the streams lag a lot, so I want to go back to using Plex and tailscale and just use AirVPN for torrents. There is no app based split tunneling on airvpn client, eddie. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Abject-Beginning8288 · 2023-11-30 16:55 Yes, VPNHouse is great for self-hosted setups, you can use their open- code on the Github. It offers strong security and reliable connections ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VersionMoist8167 · 2023-12-02 07:44 Can it handle high traffic and maintain privacy? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Abject-Beginning8288 · 2023-12-03 11:30 Definitely. VPNHouse is designed for high performance and ensures your self-hosted server remains secure or you can connect directly from their apps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- holey_shite · 2023-12-04 09:25 Setting up the funnel is pretty straightforward. You can follow tailscale documentation for that: [https://tailscale.com/kb/1223/funne l/](https://tailscale.com/kb/1223/funnel/) Once you have set up the funnel, you need two things. 1. The Full Domain from your tailscale admin console for your plex server. (tailscale -> admin console -> Machines -> click on the machine running plex server) 2. Copy this Full Domain and add it to the Custom server access URL's on your plex server. (Plex server UI -> Settings -> Network -> Custom server access URL) Once this is done, you should be able to access plex using the apps wherever. Please note that the Custom server access URL is public information and can lead to nasty intrusions into your server. The traffic passes through tailscale servers unlike when you use a tunnel. There is no defined bandwidth restriction on this as of now but this might change if a lot of users start using this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S6LucasGrey · 2023-12-04 11:58 Thanks, I think I already use this similar setup, but I have never enabled Tailscale Funnel like it says on that documentation. In Plex, I use my Tailscale server URL:Port in custom server access URLs. Anyway, for now I have managed to split tunnel on AirVPN's Eddie client and Plex-Tailscale is working as it was before AirVPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Enfindme · 2023-12-30 15:16 openvpn
