Would like to have access to a Kali instance running of a Truenas server… how would you run it? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 18:24 Ok, what I would like is to be able to access Kali from my server, but inside and outside my network. I also do not want to use VNC. Should I do a Kasm container? A VM instance? Any suggestions or best practices? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-21 18:47 You have dozens of options to access any OS remotely. From simple VPN, to web based solutions or display protocols (VDI). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 19:01 I guess right now im looking at running an OS as a container or as a VM and wondering which one would be best. My use case is just learning Linux as an OS. Specifically, Kali ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-21 19:15 Then I would suggest you access Kali running in a VM via VPN with X11 or VNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 19:16 Ok, so I don’t need to look into GPU pass through then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-21 19:20 Use a VM, the end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-21 19:20 You did not mention anything about GPU passthrough. If you need 3D acceleration in your desktop for 3D workloads neither of what I suggested would work very well. For that use case you need to consider VDI because of the performance benefits. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 19:36 Got it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 19:39 My bad. I probably won’t really need it for Learning Linux. I’m not even sure the GPU I have will work on the server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- persiusone · 2023-10-21 20:39 Best practice example would be a Kali VM on a testing vlan for playing all the Kali specific stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 22:13 Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glotzerhotze · 2023-10-21 22:46 I wouldn‘t. End of story. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 22:52 Wouldn’t what ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glotzerhotze · 2023-10-21 22:53 Run kali. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- radakul · 2023-10-21 23:28 I strongly suspect you are not the target demographic for Kali Linux given your responses to other comments. If some Youtube video steered you towards Kali, please consider using a normal, safe distribution like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Kali is intended for folks to have access to tools that can be used for penetration testing and other InfoSec-type activities. If you do not secure your Kali instance, someone *will* get access and, because they have a machine with a root account now, they can wreak absolute havoc in your internal network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-21 23:36 Noted. I’m aware of Kali, but also not knowledgeable on the security side of it. I will for sure take this into consideration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- radakul · 2023-10-21 23:47 As someone doing their M.S. in CyberSec, all that is drilled into the curriculum is risk & vulnerabilities. There's a lot of stuff out there around good security habits. If InfoSec intrigues you, I wouldn't discourage you from being curious, but would always encourage approaching things using a tried and true way. Read up on STIG's, CIS Benchmarks and CISA's hardening/best practice guides. That should give you an idea into **just how many** different things InfoSec professionals have to keep track of. Then come back to Kali and realize it is the exact opposite of all these things (by design) and it'll hit home as to why using it as a main distribution and/or EVER exposing it to the internet is a horrible idea :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobbarker4444 · 2023-10-22 10:07 Install Proxmox on the host, then Kali and Truenas as VM's under it. Tailscale or Zerotier to create a vpn to access it securely remotely. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dev-N-Danger · 2023-10-22 13:19 Why would I use ProxMox as the host when I’m hosting with TrueNas Scale? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobbarker4444 · 2023-10-23 01:50 Because it would make it easy to run both Truenas Scale and Kali, rather than trying to make Kali run under Truenas
