Random gamess are being downloaded in transmission reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 13:44 As title said. I have my system, with jellyfin, radarr, sonarr, prowlarr and transmission (amongst other services but possibly not related). The thing is, since today's morning, random games are being downloaded in my torrent. I haven't done it, how is it possible that they get added without permission? By now, I'm just deleting them as I'm at work and have no time to check much. But it's big quantities, like, 10 or 15 games are being suddenly added. Deleted all of them in the morning, and they showed up again ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itzz-Donkey · 2023-10-20 13:56 Are you port forwarding ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 13:57 Yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itzz-Donkey · 2023-10-20 13:58 Does it need a password and username to enter like qbittorrent if so then change it if not then set it up if you can ---------------------------------------------------------------------- waitingfortheencore · 2023-10-20 14:10 Someone’s downloading torrents using your instance of transmission. Turn off port forwarding and put your network behind a VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:12 I wouldn't like using a vpn, as I have people using my services and don't want them to be installing their vpns at their pcs, tvs, etc.... Are there other options to avoid it? Otherwise I will do this, but would prefer to avoid it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScribeOfGoD · 2023-10-20 14:13 It’s called split tunneling. Torrent goes through vpn everything else is normal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:14 Nice! Didn't know this, will take a look. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScribeOfGoD · 2023-10-20 14:15 II believe private interest access does ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itzz-Donkey · 2023-10-20 14:15 Anything which isn’t from kale and has port forwarding like air on and proton on but I’m sure there are better ones ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:18 I don't have a pass rn. Doing a little search it seems I can add it through congif files. Will do it in addition to the vpn recommended below. Thanks for your answers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:19 The games, random stuff. Most I can see is fitgirl repacks. Deleted them so I can't tell you exactly. If they show up again before I can fix this I'll share what is being downloaded ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itzz-Donkey · 2023-10-20 14:21 Well at least these aren’t viruses because fitgirl is safe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:25 Well, nothing assures me that this isn't something someone uploaded changing stuff from their original packages. But I guess this is Windows stuff (I'm from Linux) and I'm not executing anything, just deleted them as they downloaded ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Itzz-Donkey · 2023-10-20 14:26 Then you should be fine especially because you’re using Linux. Nobody’s going to make a virus for Linux lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 14:30 And another question. Possibly noo question. Why would anyone want to download stuff at my computer? Just to have more seeders? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arvigeus · 2023-10-20 14:53 Most optimistic scenario: to let you know that your system is compromised. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -HumanResources- · 2023-10-20 16:02 Not sure with your setup specifically, I use Mullvad and have been quite satisfied. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 16:26 Dos it let me do that "split tunnel" thing? I've read a lot of things about it and it seems people like it a lot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -HumanResources- · 2023-10-20 16:41 Honestly, I'm not too sure. That depends on your setup. I didn't need to do it through the VPN provider. I am doing it currently, but I'm not sure what the other commentor was implying when they specified you need the VPN to support it. I have a wireguard mullvad VPN tunneled to my unRAID server. I can then just set whichever docker container to use the tunneled network bridge set above. I have SABnzbd tunneled through the mullvad VPN. It's also not exposed to any external access. Users can request via jellyseerr/ombi, that sends an internal request to SAB. No external access required. If I need to access SAB (or other disconnected apps) for any reason while away, I use Tailscale to tunnel into my local network and adjust whatever I need from there. I can say, however, mullvad has been the best VPN I've used. Speed is fantastic, no downtime, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RushTfe · 2023-10-20 16:44 Thank you for your answer. Still learning this stuff, this will give me a few hours of trial and error to learn! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -HumanResources- · 2023-10-20 16:46 Cheers. It's not too hard to setup, do a bit of research and find a guide. Should be good! Best of luck when you find out you need more space and somehow have to convince the wife to let you spend more money on drives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fedroxx · 2023-10-20 17:01 Hopefully they're being nice and just trying to show you that your security is garbage. On the other hand, they could literally be loading malware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vhs_dream · 2023-10-20 18:30 Not sure about transmission, but in qbittorrent if someone has access to your instance it is trivial to use it to get a reverse shell on the server by using the functionality that runs arbitrary commands upon torrent completion. Not saying that's what's happening here (since it would make more sense to quickly download any torrent with a small file rather than tons of games) but by leaving your insurance open you are practically inviting malicious actors into your network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McMaster-Bate · 2023-10-20 19:56 Use your computer as a seedbox if they haven't installed a virus on it already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LandscapeAutomatic97 · 2023-11-10 19:27 I have same issue !! am not port forwarding, I have all the containers in one stack and using cloudflare tunnel even I have added a username and password to transmission!!
