RaspberryPi Hosting Application on Home Network with custom hostname reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Winux12 · 2023-10-20 00:22 Hey all, I am hosting applications on my home network via a raspberry pi in docker containers and I do not want to expose them over the internet. I’m trying to figure out how to configure my home network so that I can route requests going to “api.pi” to my web API running on my RaspberryPi and route “application.pi” to my web application. I’m not familiar with how home network and host names work, so looking for some guidance on how to get this setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ButCaptainThatsMYRum · 2023-10-20 00:42 Look up similar posts about internal DNS. You will get a lot of answers. Also spend a few minutes on YouTube learning about DNS. Amazing technology, very simple and fundamental but also the root of many home lab problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Winux12 · 2023-10-20 00:44 I’ll take a peak on other posts about internal DNS. Do you have any recommendations for learning about DNS on a home network and configure it? I understand a DNS Server as being similar to an address book. You give it a hostname and DNS is able to resolve the ip of where it resides. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ButCaptainThatsMYRum · 2023-10-20 00:45 I recommend Mr messers network+ YouTube course. You'll learn a lot more than just DNS and come out much better for it. The certificate isn't bad either if you want to pursue that, but his material is great and packaged in short components for easy consumption. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IVOreosFromHeaven · 2023-10-20 02:06 You’ll want a reverse proxy if you have multiple applications running on one Pi. You will also want a wildcard DNS entry pointing to the Pi for when you have the reverse proxy working ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Winux12 · 2023-10-20 02:07 Yup, that makes since. I feel like since I have pi.local resolving to my raspberry pi on my home network then all I need to do is setup a reverse proxy with nginx or something that maps requests to my API or to my web application. What do you think? Or am I missing a step? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IVOreosFromHeaven · 2023-10-20 02:24 No yeah that’s all you need! NGINX I’d recommend for sure
