Self-hosted PDF translator? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jatguy · 2023-10-19 11:06 Is anyone aware of software that I can self-host that would allow for the translation of PDF documents while keeping them in their current format and returning a PDF file? I've looked at LibreTranslate, but I don't think it will do what I need (at least by itself). What I don't want is the text just extracted and then translated. I am moving to Berlin part-time, and while I'm learning German, I also have a ton of PDF documents with somewhat complicated German language on them, and I'd like to have English copies for reference. DeepL ([www.deepl.com](https://www.deepl.com)) does this quite well, but it's about $60/month to do 100 documents. Of course, if you create one document out of many, it counts it as one, but clearly that's not their intent, and it's also inconvenient. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- discoshanktank · 2023-10-19 13:54 Sterlingpdf supports manipulating the text in lots of ways. IDK if it does translation but maybe you can use sterling to manage the pdf and libretranslate to do the translation? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElsaFennan · 2023-10-19 15:24 https://hub.docker.com/r/zorbatherainy/autotranslate and https://github.com/zorbaTheRainy/autotranslate I kind of just threw them up there and didn't test that the uploaded versions work (I use my local copies) Let me know if I need to re-upload them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jatguy · 2023-10-19 15:27 Thanks - looks like a cool project! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jatguy · 2023-10-19 15:31 This is awesome - thanks! I will try this evening. Yes, I know DeepL has the free app tier which I think is 3 docs, but in two weeks here with the apartment purchase I’m well over 100 docs. But I didn’t know about the api and its free level. Thanks again! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortairsoft · 2023-12-13 02:43 I saw aitranslations.io recommended on Reddit for translating PDFs. It can handle large documents while maintaining format and is more affordable than DeepL for bulk translation. Might be worth checking out.
