Best way to install gitlab reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jasieqb · 2023-10-16 17:05 Hi guys, I'm looking for the best solution for deploying gitlab for a small organization (\~ 20-30 members). Which solution should I pick to easily maintain? * install from deb package in vm * docker container * k8s * ...? What are your experiences? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dogeek · 2023-10-16 18:07 Small org, but how many devs ? Probably around 15 people will use git at the same time, so a bit of an oversized VM would do the trick, as you don't need the scalability from k8s at all. K8s would offer other benefits though, with operators for monitoring, cloud native databases, "integrated" object storage and scalability, but for this use case it's overkill and adds a ton of complexity. In your shoes, I'd go with a simple docker-compose file. Easy to use, easy to run, isolated from the system, it's a pretty middle of the pack solution. You just need to make sure you have adequate resources on your server for 15-20 concurrent users, which should not be too hard or expensive (a $30 VPS a month should be sufficient) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-10-16 19:38 I'd recommend using a regular Docker or Podman installation (maybe with compose), [disabling all the extras](https://www.reddit.com/r/git lab/comments/10m0hxa/gitlab_container_image_without_extra_applications /?context=3) and following [this guide](https://docs.gitlab.com/omnibu s/settings/memory_constrained_envs.html). Activate only what you need. This way you have an easy installation, easy backups and you won't use many resources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-16 20:35 Is there a specific reason why you want gitlab, because Gitea is much lighter on the resources... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xantioss · 2023-10-16 21:06 I run it for my pets projects in docker. Also maybe check the cloud options? I like the docker way for its flexibility and the amount of features, but do think about a solid backup strategy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justinhunt1223 · 2023-10-17 00:40 I run it in a vm, no complaints. I know a lot of people like the docker route. Updating the VM is pretty reliable for me. I don't know about the docker route. Gitlab is hefty though, have you looked into other options?
