Two months playing with this self hosting hobby. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Franceesios · 2023-10-16 00:45 And it's quite FUN! So here's my super cheap and easy setup : I'm using an ROC-RK3328-CC board from Libre Computer, and I've installed Armbian 23.8 Bookworm CLI version on it, why Armbian? It just works flawlessly with this board, completely headless setup, just insert the micro SD card into the board connect UTP cable to my router and power the board on, that's about it! And log into the system via SSH, Armbian on it self offers quite easy to navigate CLI menu like just typing sudo armbian-config to get to the configuration menu where you can even install some apps from. So yeah enough of the board itself now. ******************************************** I've ventured into docker containers thanks to Network Chuck amazing explanation videos, and got portainer up and running in minutes, install plex for my *cough* legally owned CDs that I've ripped *cough* and playback is amazing, I can also stream videos without any issues (tought that video playback would surely put this cheap board in it's knees but i was wrong). So yeah for media I'm just using plex alone, and Tautulli for monitoring cuz yeah we ain't paying for the plex pass. ****************************************** For monitoring of my server I'm using Pulseway so I can have the Pulseway app on my phone and get notifications if anything starts to hick up. ****************************************** How to I access my server and services from outside my network? I'm using Tailscale Zero config vpn, and Cloudflare tunnels with my own bought domain name so it looks more professional. ****************************************** Lastly I'm venturing with CasaOS, since it makes every single thing you'll ever want to do with your media server so easy. The file manager the drag and drop of windows folder it's a life saver for me. ****************************************** I've also attached an 4TB mechanical Harddisk directly to the board via its USB port, I think we can call it now my NAS? Other than that im ordering some more boards at the moment, so I can learn about kubernetes (K3s) clusters, and also I would like to learn how to automate my media downloads apps like Lidar doesn't seem to work flawlessly when trying to fetch the right info to pass to the download client, so I'm still manually doing the downloads (any tips here is appreciated!) So yeah I just wanted to share my adventure and experience with all this self hosting hobby that I'm venturing into. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Franceesios · 2023-10-16 00:58 **Oh yeah, im also use tailscale amazing subnet router option, thus when connected to the tailscale vpn service from out side my local network, I can still use my local subnet range like 192.168.1.83 follow by the service port number.** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-10-16 01:39 CasaOS is a W but I sitll havent figured out how to setup Gluetun with qBittorrent :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Franceesios · 2023-10-16 01:48 I didn't try out Gluetun yet, I will take a look at it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-16 03:37 /r/CosmosServer recently added builtin VPN to their "OS", imo a great alternative to CasaOS and very actively develeoped. But im sure Gluetun can work there too, its just plain Docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redditfatbloke · 2023-10-16 07:59 It's easier if you install portainer, and install gluetun via that. There is a confusing order of business, but it works. I have written somewhere on here how I do it (after much trial and error) and dbtech has a good guide on YouTube ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-16 10:31 Community created QBittorrent compose file with Glueten VPN included[https://github.com/azukaar/cosmos-servapps-official/blob/f6cc 5b37af27fe2f8391021204d9b27161f8dc1c/servapps/Qbittorrent-vpn/cosmos- compose.json](https://github.com/azukaar/cosmos-servapps-official/blob /f6cc5b37af27fe2f8391021204d9b27161f8dc1c/servapps/Qbittorrent- vpn/cosmos-compose.json) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-16 10:34 Hehe nice! Maybe i should just ping you directly each time something about Cosmos comes up here ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-10-16 10:39 lol :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StefanMcL-Pulseway2 · 2023-10-16 10:51 This is a really cool setup (also sickkkk background) Glad Pulseway could help you out :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-10-16 13:59 Thats interesting, I will have to check that out ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poulain_ght · 2023-10-16 15:14 Deku is cool! Windows is not! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Franceesios · 2023-10-16 15:50 Lmao! Thinking of installing Debian 12 soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poulain_ght · 2023-10-16 15:55 You already took an insane path by making this yourself! Adopting linux is surely the next step in your journey! Everything will be easier then! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern-Ad7222 · 2023-10-16 18:05 Something, as an improvement, i hit miself into and it actually worked. Tailscale + some cheap dns from godaddy + letsencrypt tls certs (in private network). Getting rid of security warnings was a huge improvement to my home lab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-16 18:51 Hey, Franceesios!
