Tower server sideways? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltLawyer · 2023-10-15 18:33 Any concerns about a bunch of spinning HDDs rotated 90° along the long edge (sata ports down)? I built a server in a fractal design Define R5 with 6 HDDs and a few SSDs but the case was a little bigger than expected and it won't fit in the intended space vertically. Most cooling is on the front and back, so shouldn't matter. Pretty sure it's not an issue but I've never laid a tower down in my life so thought I'd check with the community before I do! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- no-fapping-way · 2023-10-15 19:00 Running drives vertically is not at all an issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-15 19:16 No. HDD work on any rotation, doesn't matter as long as you are not moving the case while they spin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-15 19:17 No problem. HDD work on any rotation, doesn't matter as long as you are not moving the case while they spin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- no-fapping-way · 2023-10-15 19:18 Yes, that’s what I said. It doesn’t matter if they are vertical. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wlramsey · 2023-10-15 19:58 No issues, just make sure motherboard is on the bottom and not the top. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slowmail · 2023-10-15 20:43 [Some major harddisk manufacturers previously responded to this question (back in \~2012), recommending mounting harddisks at a 90deg angle](https://www.howtogeek.com/128397/does-hard-drive-orientation- affect-its-lifespan/); this could be horizontal, vertical, sideways, or even upside down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-10-15 22:06 No problem at all https://www.backblaze.com/blog/open-source-data- storage-server/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rocket1420 · 2023-10-15 22:43 Many rack mount drive holders are exactly like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfhosted-ModTeam · 2023-10-16 02:57 This post is being removed due to the subject not being related to the "selfhosted" theme of the community.
