Help Needed: Managing Hard Drives in Proxmox with Unraid Setup! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tamenqt · 2023-10-15 14:40 Hey everyone, I recently set up a home server running Proxmox, and I'm facing a bit of a dilemma. Here's my current setup: I have a 1TB SSD for Proxmox OS, another 1TB SSD as cache, and 2x 14TB HDDs connected via SATA PCIe. I'm relatively new to the self-hosting world and have been having a great time exploring and experimenting with various setups. However, I've encountered a major issue that I can't seem to wrap my head around. When I first installed Proxmox, I used TrueNAS to manage my hard drive shares. But I ran into problems and switched to Unraid. It's working better now, but I can't shake the feeling that I might be missing something crucial. My main question is: Do I really need a separate container to manage my hard drives? It seems odd that I can't integrate them directly into my existing containers. I noticed that Proxmox allows creating ZFS pools and sharing them using Turnkey, which seems much simpler and resource-efficient compared to my current XFS pool setup in Unraid. I'm reaching out for your expertise. What are some elegant solutions to pass my hard drives directly into my containers within the Proxmox environment, especially considering my Unraid setup? I'd greatly appreciate any insights and guidance you can provide! Thanks in advance for your help! 🚀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _--__-___--_ · 2023-10-15 22:40 I run unraid in a vm on proxmox. All my drives are connected to a raid card that I directly pass through to the vm. I have a few lxcs that run docker and I set up shares from unraid to them using nfs volumes. I’m not sure I’d do it this way again. I run into issues with stale file handles on those nfs volumes sometimes, which is annoying, and usually requires bouncing the container to solve it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _--__-___--_ · 2023-10-15 22:42 You could, instead, use zfs on proxmox like you said. Then map directories on that pool into your vms or containers. There are requirements around those pools but it sounds like you’re on your way there (matching disk sizes mainly)
