Jellyfin use more than 100% CPU docker on rpi 4 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aromatic_Cap_8982 · 2023-10-15 12:34 Hello, I have a raspberry pi 4 headless running docker self hosting a seedbox (radarr, sonarr, jellyfin etc...). The rpi went slow so I used the command "docker stats" and saw something weird : https://preview.redd.it/3kmbbazz1dub1.png?width=1427&format=png&auto=w ebp&s=8d2ba3846950824b801af27769c6e7af277af292 How is it possible that Jellyfin use 217% CPU ? Also it is over on NET I/O and BLOCK I/O. Also the rpi crash sometimes and I need to restart it manually, is it the reason ? What can I do ? I use Linuxserver docker container. Thanks you ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-10-15 12:51 100% = 1 core So if it's scanning metadata or playing back something this seems normal. If you're debugging crashes you should work with journalctl and post the logs (afaik most pi distros mount the log folder as ram drive which makes it so that the logs do not persist reboots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zedris · 2023-10-15 13:15 I kinds gave up on jellyfin. Every year i try its the same story. No matter what this sub says and the true selfhosting vs plex. It uses may too many resources on any device i have installed it. It has no built in 2fa. No users. No plexapm. No chromecast. No good apps besides infuse or for tvs. Its just gimped and its updates are so slow. Yeah plex may be taking weird direction but it works has apps 2fa users so i can share and everything else in between. Plus the resources it uses are on a different level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 13:32 /r/raspberry_pi and /r/LinuxQuestions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 13:33 This is here is clearly not a Jellyfin problem, but a PEBCAK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlimeCityKing · 2023-10-15 13:52 > No Chromecast There’s chomecast support. I have the app on my ccwgtv and you can cast to chromecast from a browser. > No users What do you mean? I have like 20 user accounts, there’s even ldap support > resource usage I’ve only run into resource issues when I transcode but other than that it doesn’t use practically any resources on idle. Definitely use plex if you prefer it, but these things you mentioned are just factually incorrect ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-15 13:52 You don't seem to know what you are talking about. Sounds like the problem is you and not Jellyfin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-10-15 14:31 You are the Problem mate ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bloodrose_GW2 · 2023-10-15 15:06 > No chromecast. N Chromecast just works fine for me. It was a little complicated to set up though, and not because of jellyfin but due to how picky cromecast is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hekermon · 2023-10-15 15:38 it doesn't use much resources if you use jellifin player, if you play via web UI then it does transcoding which requires good amount of cpu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- camxct · 2023-10-15 16:40 I'm not surprised you're having issues. That's an awful lot to be running on a single Pi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-15 16:52 Wow, it's so weird you're taking a beating for this comment. Folks get so defensive about jellyfin in this sub it makes me believe there must be some fishy about the project. People behaving and commenting such really shows off the weakness of the product and a lack of good faith in that community. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-10-15 17:01 Thing is: Jellyfin is not a *product*, It's a piece of software, developed by people in their free time, provided to you for free without a support sla. It sure has its weakness, but complaining about it doesnt help the software getting better. It's rather decremental to the people devoting a lot of their time in development, testing and contributing in the Forums if people just bash jellyfin. Espeacially if not everything is true (fe chromecast works fine and CPU usage isnt abnormally high if correctly setup). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deukhoofd · 2023-10-15 17:19 Considering the also high CPU use of qbittorrent I'm seeing in the screenshot, I'd personally expect this to be a IO issue with the RPI. I've seen this in the past on my own RPIs as well, when the SD-card started degrading (which they tended to very quickly). It was one of the reasons I moved away from RPIs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-15 18:02 Anything produced, even software, is a product. If that isn't enough for you, it even has a brand. SLAs are agreements, and sometimes they aren't even contractual. Claiming jellyfish is not a product is foolish argument. Communication is crucial to open source projects. If people never complained, the maintainers would never know what folks wanted improved or fixed. It would turn the project into a silo. Assuming any criticism is given in bad faith, as you are doing, is an anti pattern for maintaining healthy open source communities. Interoperability in good faith is crucial to open source projects. If the community is unwilling to let users use the viewer of their choice, then the community is engaging in the same rent seeking behavior that commercial projects engage in. If they're unable, then it's just a bad product! We've come full circle, kid! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-10-15 18:08 > Wow, it's so weird you're taking a beating for this comment As most of the comment is false, I don't find it weird personally. Plex or Jellyfin is a personal choice. The open source community prefer open source softwares, so Jellyfin as some of its user base there, but false statements like this comment are always downvoted like that on both side, whatever it's about Plex or Jellyfin. It's not "just a fanboy thing" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anposter · 2023-10-15 18:13 The solution for this is very simple: use SSD. I assume you don't use an sdcard with your new appliance so why use it with RPI? People usually put cheapest sdcard they can buy for the size and then are surprised how slow and unreliable ends up being. If you really want to use an scard on something important, V30 high endurance with 5-10 year warranty should be a must. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katbyte · 2023-10-15 18:19 >Wow, it's so weird you're taking a beating for this comment not really, nearly all of it is wrong and i don't even use jellyfin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-15 18:22 Yeah, let's just agree that their experience is totally invalid. The jellyfin community sounds soo *great*. /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-10-15 19:35 Their experience doesn't mention the Jellyfin community so I don't understand why you are messing up the two things, besides trying to stir up drama. Half the things they mention are factually incorrect. It's clear they have no idea what they are talking about and frankly, the comment serves no other purpose but to whine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-15 19:36 I personally love how we can just dismiss their experiences outright. You're not coming to me with data, closed projet issues, documentation, or anything material. But, we can say more than one person making remarks about their experience with system resources and a product are wrong. I did not mention competititors, or fanboys. It is sounding to me that those are the things folks in this discussion are sensitive about, which tells me what you're saying isn't even in good faith. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-10-15 19:52 Youre right of course and (constructive) critsism is valuable. On everything, espescially on FLOSS. I re-phrased some sentences in my original Post. What frustrated me mainly was people that just vent / rant how "bad" jellyfin is without beeing constructive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-15 19:53 A discussion forum of jellyfin users is part of the jellyfin community, especially because that product fits very well in the given topic of this discussion forum. That's just the associative property. What's interesting is how defensive the community gets about discussion about experiences that are different from the experiences of people that have the best outcomes. These discussions are not coming through with anything material to makes this discussion of experiences productive. You and others claimed there is no factual basis that some of these participants are having trouble with system resources while running jellyfin under different use cases. You dismissed their experiences without any legwork to understanding more about their installation, or being connected to the project enough to communicate something that might be helpful. That's what gaslighting is. It's bad faith communication. And it reflects poorly on the entire jellyfin community. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-10-15 20:23 Nobody denies there is no bad experiences or lacking features. It's a DIY sort of project and we all know some functionality comes from 3rd parties. Jellyfin has no users? Has no 2fa? Has no audio clients? Or chromecast? It has them all. It takes a bit more work but it has all these things - it's not a product after all. As for the dismissal of their experience, there is not really that much to go by. Some vague ridiculous claims about bad performance to back up the false claims. Anyone that has ever tried to help someone like this knows that they have not done their homework (talking bs), they are venting frustration and they have probably already made up their mind. The comment was not set up for help but to whine. So you tell me what's the merit of their comment? They aren't looking for help. They are not criticizing actual shortcoming but imaginary ones. Just some venting. Why do we need that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katbyte · 2023-10-15 20:33 When someone is staring factually incorrect information don’t be surprised when people call it out. It would be like saying “plex doesn’t work over https” and then being upset when people say “uh no that’s false” ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-10-15 20:47 I personally never tried Plex in the first place so I can't compare ressources, but never had issues personally I don't judge people using Plex at all, but I judge those kind of comments that bring nothing but vague "it doesn't work" that goes against everything I read here Jellyfin surely miss some features that Plex has. It is not as mature and it doesn't make sharing with others as easy, but I personally avoid cloud services and I'm not interested in Plex for reasons like their cloud-auth and the software itself being closed source > I did not mention competititors, or fanboys Maybe I didn't understand your comment about him being "beated" by Jellyfin's user. > which tells me what you're saying isn't even in good faith I don't know what I said that could be in "bad faith", feel free to explain He said Jellyfin had no user, no PlexAmp and no chromcast support. That's not experience, that's just not true. I don't use JellyAmp so I can't compare features, but statements like that tells me HIS comment isn't in good faith ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AuthorYess · 2023-10-15 20:50 Not the person you replied to but... > Has no 2fa Ya it has no 2fa or SSO support for anything other than the browser (which is provided usually by other auth service like Authelia or Authentik but interferes with apps). > No audio clients No good Audio clients for iOS at least, they're all simple apps that only stream. Not a replacement for plexamp or spotify like services > Chromecast Can't speak to this, chromecast isn't a use case I find very useful for high quality content, which the primary benefit of selfhosting a media server for me. Jellyfin does however not work with ASS subtitles (in a separate file) without transcoding on Android TV. Additionally the app lags in several situations, doesn't follow UX standards related to scrubbing, and also takes ages to start for any 4k video. I actually like the style of the app way more than Emby Android TV app which is my current at home on my Shield (Plex is my remote server for mainly music) but switching to Jellyfin always finds me annoyed at the level of polish. There are two people in love with Jellyfin, those that love FOSS at the expense of any nice to have features, and those that don't want to pay for anything. Those that value their time, ease of sharing with friends and family, and a much higher level of polish will choose Plex. I use Emby mainly because they have a great collection of apps, they were first to implement ASS/SSA support in their apps, and I got lifetime ages ago. The person continually scaremongering about Plex collecting your data hasn't read their privacy policy and trusts no one. But make no mistake, the downvoting of the main person in this thread isn't justified because "it's mainly false", it's downvoted because the people in selfhosted think Plex is the devil and no one should ever say bad things about Jellyfin because it's FOSS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 20:58 You can play in web without transcoding too. It just depends what the browser you use supports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScrewedThePooch · 2023-10-15 21:31 You're holding it wrong. But seriously, Jellyfin requires proper configuration to optimize. Mine went down from 30-50% CPU to 10% once I finally got hardware acceleration to work. Also, if you're trying to run Jellyfin on a Pi, you're gonna have a bad time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TensyL · 2023-10-16 04:19 I was thinking a 1D10T error myself ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lannistersstark · 2023-10-16 05:32 > I personally love how we can just dismiss their experiences outright. It's easy to dismiss their "experiences" when it's riddled of inaccuracies such as "No users, no chromecast" etc. Literally spreading misinformation. What do you expect us to do, "Ah yes you make good points?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lannistersstark · 2023-10-16 05:33 You can move goal posts all you want, doesn't magically make the original comment correct. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AuthorYess · 2023-10-16 06:36 Excellent response, great arguments! A+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-10-16 13:41 Looks normal, you have 4 cores on the RPi 4, so you can hit 400% CPU usage. Crashing could be due to running out of memory, or IO issues potentially. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CosineTau · 2023-10-17 02:09 \> That's not experience, that's just not true This is the issue this discussion is really about, and I am not trying to make this discussion about defending untruths, I can accept it in good faith these services have that functionality. While the nature of this forum is technical, I think posts like comment OP and OP show that users with a broad range of technical skills show up here to discuss their issue and experience, with an additional layer of varying time. Not to mention hardware and every other variable under the sun. I do not have a good definition of bad faith argumentation. But I know how to get value. To deliver value in this situation I believe you have to drill down into the problem. Like a lot of technical problems, they frequently come down to nuanced details. My experience says this translate into what we lay people say is patience. It is hard because meeting frustration with frustration is so easy, and getting into the guts of something takes time. This is where I think the "thin line" is between good and bad faith discussion is, and the reason why so many experienced people are sometimes so quiet. Bad faith discussion happens when we have lost patience. I'm saying all this because I think I am hearing from someone who also hates untruths, fake news, and bullshit. But we can close the discussion at the beginning just because we think the lies that are out there are the same ones we are up against. There is more leg work that we got to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-10-17 02:32 It's surely easier to respond to frustration with frustration and I already knew from the comment itself that the person was not asking for help or was genunely wondering why it wasn't working for them. The comment itself uses sentences like "No matter what this sub says" and formulate his issues as facts. This why I didn't reply to this person at all. I was replying to your surprise by the fact I wasn't suprised at all as the comment was a perfect receipe to get this exact reaction from people. Some of us comes here open minded and are ready to discuss their position, but others are closed minded and have their mind made up. They are not commenting in a constructive matter, they are kinda trying to light a fire. Maybe I am wrong there, but it seems to me that the comment we are talking about fits the later I am always happy to help the beginners that arrives here in good faith even when they have questions that seems stupid at first. On the other hand, I have no patience for people that didn't try anything, didn't search anywhere and expect someone to do everything for them. I know I can look frustrated, but I am not. I am just discussing about your surprise :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-10-17 02:40 > not one person offered any guidance just incorrect setup incorrect usage. Rpi is the problem when i clearly stated i have tried it on multiple setups and devices not one works well regardless. Hw transcoding doesnt use cpu usage all the way to 30-40% is normal on idle. You are the problem. If your are looking for help, the community is there and happy to help, but you formulated your issues as facts and made multiple false statments. The reaction you got is exactly the one we get for those types of comment nowadays, sadly. If you want to work on your issues, I'll be happy to help. If you are happy with plex and don't want to, it's also perfectly fine. Keep in mind that wording your issues as universal facts will most likely get the same reaction everytime, on any subreddits but also on any social medias.
