Synology DS216J vs DIY reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nyx1047 · 2023-10-15 09:51 I wanted to be able to access my files remotely, manage photos and videos and I might do VPNs as well. NAS will also be used for backups. Currently I can get a Synology DS216J for around $80 For slightly Cheaper, I can get a Dell Wyse 5070 Mini PC, add m.2 to sata and external sata power for DIY Setup or for similar price sa the Synology and a much cleaner look, Dell Wyse 5070 + USB 2 Bay Raid Enclosure. Which should be a better option? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RandomName01 · 2023-10-15 10:20 Synology requires less effort and administration, a self built machine will be more flexible at the cost of your time and effort. Based on your post I’d probably recommend Synology. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autisticit · 2023-10-15 10:34 DIY is always better at performances. I mean look at the Synology whooping 1GB of RAM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nyx1047 · 2023-10-15 10:35 Yeah, was concerned with that as well. Would I be held back by Synology if my isp is 250mbps? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 10:40 One has nothing to do with the other. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 10:42 Just fyi, this sub is about selfhosting **software services**, not about any hardware purchase or build advice :s > Self-hosting, as it pertains to the /r/selfhosted subreddit, is any software intended to replace or replicate an existing website, web service, or web app, that the user who puts said software into place has full control over the hosting environment either at the Operating System level or at the level where they fully control all data pertinent to the software being hosted, including data related to the functionality of the software being hosted. > This subreddit focuses on the software that is considered to be self-hosted, regardless of where it is being hosted. > https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/wiki/selfhosted Consider subs like /r/Homelab /r/HomeServer /r/HomeNetworking /r/BuildaPC /r/Synology ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nyx1047 · 2023-10-15 10:48 Oh so only software side here? Ok gonna ask on homelab or homeserver ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-15 11:04 Thats what it says :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-10-15 12:51 If building your own NAS is of interest then go for it.. But if you just want storage to be set and forget, my preference is a off-the- self NAS... I rolled my own for many years, but got fed up with the constant battle of performance issues, access problems and finding 3rd party apps.. and it was constant. I find little "fun" in storage, but it is a necessity for self-hosting, and it needs to be stable. With something like Synology or QNAP, a lot of people make the mistake of looking at the meterial cost - Forgetting the fact, the value is in the features it offers.. with everything from Photos, to the killer Active Backup For Business.. which can back-up everything from a ESXi Host through to your PC, it has no "license" limitation... and many business pay the likes of Veeam and Veritas hundreds of **thousands** for comparable features. I switched to QNAP about 5 years ago, then never looked back.. well, aside from switching across to Synology for ABB, which allowed me to ditch several different back-up solutions I was using. With regards to the DS216J.. Get what is with-in your budget. My only advise here is, a NAS is an investment, and should last you 3-5 years, if your budget allows, it always worth getting something more recent.. not only for performance, but continued firmware updates, warranty etc.. I saw the 223J for 190 Euros during. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isleepbad · 2023-10-15 13:19 This. I'm more than capable of managing my server alone but man I don't have the time. Synology saves me so much time. The only thing extra I did for mine was upgrade the ram. The only issue OS wise is that sometimes you'll have to find workarounds for certain things, like MACVLANs for anything on port 80/443. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- viktae · 2023-10-15 14:11 Out of curiosity, what software were you using with your own NAS ? I always heard that TrueNAS was the best thing out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redkania · 2023-10-15 14:24 The DS216J is solid (it was my first Synology as well), just keep in mind that it doesn't come with Docker. Doesn't sound like it is a required use case for you, but should you fall down the rabbit hole of self-hosting, it was a capability I wished I paid more attention to when I did my initial research. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-10-15 15:44 I started with Windows Server 2016, then moved to Debian, and I used Webmin for the management console... I tried Cockpit but could not get it working, and TrueNAS was not an option, as the recommendations.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-15 15:49 ## Post Removed Hey, nyx1047!
