Share your set up ideas for Raspberry Pi 4 b (8gb) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JackJackson- · 2023-10-13 14:00 I have a Rpi 4b 8gb. Which I am planning to self hosted and use Start9 for it. Here are some of my question. 1. How many task it can handle? Ideally, I wanted to NAS, Host my own website, Plex, Adblock, Node running, VPN, etc. Could it to these all in one home server? 2. Do I need to plug in additional power for the ssd connected to Rpi4? Because I heard that if the power is not enough for the SSD. Data can be loss or in risk. (If so, do you have any recommend set up for SSD power.) 3. How can I remotely connect to my server via Start9? For instance, when I'm outside I just wanna check that my server run normally. 4. Which case should I use for the thermal problem? I am looking into Argon lite. Plus, It would be great if you guys can share your set up, just in case you have similarly task or goal like me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-13 14:13 https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/176bsiq/what_is_a_raspber ry_pi_4_with_4gb_ram_capable_of/ https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=raspberry&restrict_sr=on& include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=get+started&restrict_sr=o n&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=beginner&restrict_sr=on&i nclude_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=what+should+host&restrict _sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all I would suggest using /r/raspberry_pi for Pi specific questions, especially hardware because this sub is about selfhosting software. And refer to "Start9" support for support about that platform? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Flipdip3 · 2023-10-13 19:02 For a NAS you're going to have pretty limited transfer rates, but it should otherwise work fine. Ghost/adblock/VPN are pretty negligible in terms of resources. Node depends on what you are doing within node, but unless you are crunching lots of numbers you should be fine. I have a single pi4 that is running OpenSpeedTest, Dashy, mariaDB, AdGuard, DockerRegistry, Glances, PingvinShare, UptimeKuma, Shlink, Rallly, NTFY, Mealie, ITTools, Gitea, and Ghost. It has an SSD connected to it with a Raspberry Pi branded power supply. I have several other pis with similar loads and haven't had problems with several years of running them. According to htop I have a .62 system load and 1.5gb of memory used. They aren't the fastest machines out there and I wouldn't use one for anything that gets tons of use, but for simple low volume stuff they are far more capable than people think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavilesphoto · 2023-10-13 20:55 My use case: I have home assistant, plex, Adguard, portainer, file browser, motioneye, nginx proxy manager.... 22 containers running at the same time. About 20% cpu and around 75% memory. I'm planning to get a pi5 8gb for this to grow a little more, with OpenOffice or something else... It gets a little hot in Spain, but with an Argon One case, it runs flawlessly. I have also two SSD attached and no problem in the last year and a half I have been using this setup. For accessing from outside your lan, I recommend tailscale, that can also be used to access the network(lan, but also the rest) at insecure places as it is used as a vpn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SegaTape · 2023-10-14 00:42 i have plex, adguard, vaultwarden, mealie, and navidrome running on an RPI 4b via runtipi. 11 docker containers in all, with a cloudflared tunnel. it works great and rarely goes over 10% cpu usage. these are pretty low-intensity applications and i almost never do things like plex transcoding, but i figure that goes with the territory with a raspberry pi. the rpi4 and the attached 5 TB HDD each have their own power supply, the rpi usb ports don't seem to be able to drive a big HDD. i'm not really sure about start9, but i notmally just ssh into the rpi and look at things with top or whatever ot make sure things are running well for thermal issues - honestly i haven't run into them at all. i originally had a small fan in my case but disconnected it because the noise was annoying. the whole setup is just tucked away in a shelf and runs fine. the case i had came with stick-on heat sinks but as mentioned earlier the cpu usage in my setup is extremely low most of the time anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JackJackson- · 2023-10-14 04:32 Thank you so much for the resources. Appreciate that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JackJackson- · 2023-10-14 04:40 May I ask, why don't you consider NUC or Dell optiplex rather than Pi5? I heard that these mini PC will works better for home server or selfhost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JackJackson- · 2023-10-14 04:43 What's the benefit of using Cloudflare Tunnel? I heard it is better than using VPN. And is it free? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavilesphoto · 2023-10-16 16:10 I'm thinking about getting a pi5 but, as i have a pi4 with an alluminium case and everything works fine.... Truth is this is getting to an edge and i fear i wont be able to run more things, but truth is also that i cant think about hosting much more than what i have, home assistant and plex is my basis and almost everything else is something i can live without. Surely NUC, proxmox and other systems are better, but i can handle it by now.
