Need help exposing an external HardDrive connected to my home server to other computers reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaLlMeFaP · 2023-10-13 05:57 Hi Guys! Very Very new to the world of self hosting. I recently got an old pc that I have been using for some jellyfin, immich related tasks. I found some old external hard drives in great condition and was wondering if anyone knew a way I could access these external HDDs on other devices outside the network. I mainly want to periodically store files from other devices on this drive, without having to carry it around. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-13 06:35 Run any kind of fileserver service and share the drives? Look through the list from the subreddit sidebar: https://github.com/Kickball/awesome-selfhosted or simply search this sub. Filebrowser is popular for example, or SFTPGo. Or install Cockpit with filesharing addons and you can create simple SMB/NFS shares. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-13 08:39 The answer to 50% of posts is Tailscale. No idea why not everybody reading here already knows it exists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-13 13:10 This sub is basically * 40% "use nextcloud" * 30% "use cloudflare" * 20% "use tailscale" and then actually 10% of the rest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-13 14:29 But in this case - once again - Tailscale is the correct answer... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-13 14:30 Oh im not against Tailscale in this case, not sure about it being "the" correct answer, its a correct answer :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaLlMeFaP · 2023-10-13 18:39 Thanks I set up tailscale and set up a NFS drive that’s shared over my tailscale IP. This is exactly what I wanted. Thank you again. Although the copying speeds are REALLY slow, anyway I could make it faster? Or do anything different ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-13 21:40 Do you copy locally or remote? If you copy remote, your internet upload is your limit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaLlMeFaP · 2023-10-14 00:08 Remotely. It’s just tooo slow. Thanks a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-14 09:39 Well, ofc then the data needs to go through your internet provider upload. And that is mostly way less than download. If you can get a faster tariff, there is most of the time also more upload included.
