Is registering a domain with a No-IP DNS Hostname (A) possible? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SaladFingerzzz · 2023-10-12 13:11 Registered a domain with porkbun & I have a server running which is set up on no-ip with a DNS hostname (A) so it's like [xxxxx.ddns.net](https://xxxxx.ddns.net). It is up & running but I'm kinda confused as to how to point the domain with porkbun to the [xxxxx.ddns.net](https://xxxxx.ddns.net). Seems like it's expecting an IP address.. Tried doing the "Quick DNS Config" using the [xxxx.ddns.net](https://xxxx.ddns.net) and I get a "The template domain is invalid. (001)" Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- throwaway234f32423df · 2023-10-12 16:15 an A record must point to an IP address you could use a CNAME instead but CNAMEs at the root are generally disallowed due to RFC violation some DNS providers allow CNAMEs at the root through CNAME flattening, i.e. at lookup time they resolve the CNAME target and return synthetic A / AAAA records accordingly Cloudflare is one DNS provider that allows this and you don't have to do anything special to make it work, just create a CNAME at the root and it'll be automatically flattened other DNS providers implement this via a pseudo-type ALIAS which is not a real type of DNS record but is a signal to the DNS provider that you want them to perform CNAME flattening ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrSlaw · 2023-10-12 17:43 https://kb.porkbun.com/article/85-how-to-connect-your-root-domain- when-your-web-host-wont-provide-an-ip-address ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edvauler · 2023-10-12 20:29 I am not at porkbun, but choose to do it in some other way. My domain registrar is also a hoster and so it has an API to update settings for the domain. I ran a dynDNS client at home and update the domain with dynamic IP and do not depend on a DyNDNS service anymore. Friend of mine is using Cloudflare's dns management in which you are dedicating the authoriative dns towards them (afaik I understand). Then use the cloudflare API to update IP details of domain. https://www.cloudflare.com/application-services/products/dns/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bruzdziciel · 2023-10-12 21:36 For some domains I have set A record to 127.0.0.1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- davidedpg10 · 2023-10-13 01:37 Just register it with something like CloudFlare. If you have PFSense or OpnSense, theres automation to keep a DNS record in the registrar up to date. If not, you can use a docker container that keeps it up to date, or literally a script. It's not a difficult problem to solve nowadays and then you have it with a reputable provider
