simplifying the urls for my services reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- superslomotion · 2023-10-12 05:11 hi, newbie here, so i'm looking for a dummies guide in order to turn my url like pihole.lan/admin/ into just pihole.lan and also, for things with specific ports, is there a way to include the port in the dns? ( i'm using pihole's dns for the things i'm running on proxmox. I tried setting up nginx proxy manager but i'm out of my depth ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-12 05:20 > and also, for things with specific ports, is there a way to include the port in the dns? For the most part, no. Some services support (or even requie) SRV records, but, for most things, ports are not a DNS thing. DNS, after all, is "Domain **Name** System". What you are looking for is a reverse proxy (my preference: [nginx](https://nginx.org)). Also, > pihole.lan/admin/ > into just > pihole.lan ...is doable in some circumstances (URL rewriting) but not in others (links on the home page will break). The /admin part is the 'path' element of the URL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-12 05:34 A reverse proxy can do that. I can recommend Nginx for this. There a hundred of thousands of tutorials out there how to do proxy with url rewrite. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-12 06:25 > I tried setting up nginx proxy manager but i'm out of my depth Well keep trying? And maaaaaybe mention what exactly is the problem? Because a reverse proxy is exactly what is needed for your questions. You can try /r/NginxProxyManager for example. > is there a way to include the port in the dns? No. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rinze24 · 2023-10-12 06:31 General Steps: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/161uw89/co mment/jxu7jkg/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
