What motherboard should I get for a home server I have a Ryzen 5600. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skullfurious · 2023-10-12 04:58 Hey, so I'm building a home server inside of a thermaltake cube. I haven't been able to find an matx motherboard that supports ECC and is also recommended by Reddit. I've been considering the following 2 boards: * ASRock B550M PRO4 * ASUS Prime B550M-A Just looking for a b550m with ECC support. Doesn't really need to be 550 architecture but I need something that supports the 5600 and preferably ECC since I was informed it was good to have for servers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I feel very out of my depth on this topic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- allebb · 2023-10-12 06:39 If it helps - I've just built a new TrueNAS server in a Fractal Node 804 and went with the ASRock B550M PRO4 which I pair with an 5600X and 64Gb of ECC UDIMM and it works great! ...I normally use ASUS motherboards for my gaming rigs/workstations but I personally really like using the ASRock (consumer) boards for my homelab servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skullfurious · 2023-10-12 07:15 Alright thank you. I was discussing this in the low-endtalk discord server and they recommended I drop the ECC requirement. I'm on the edge but would you be willing to link the UDIMM you ended up getting? Also our of curiosity what PSU did you go with? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dolomitt · 2023-10-12 07:36 I have the ASUS Prime B550M-A CSM with a 5700x. I went for standard memory, ECC is nice to have to my understanding. Check the difference and what you could get with it, maybe more RAM or SSD cache. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skullfurious · 2023-10-12 07:37 Thanks I appreciate it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiseguy9317 · 2023-10-12 08:01 Agreed, ECC is kind of unnecessary . Keep an eye on total power consumption if it will be on 24x7x365. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skullfurious · 2023-10-12 08:04 What considerations do you recommend for watching power consumption? Do you think the MSI mAtx b550m vc will be hard on power with a 5600? Going with 32 gigs of RAM for now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- allebb · 2023-10-12 08:04 The ONLY reason I went with ECC RAM was due to the fact I was using it with TrueNAS/ZFS and data integrity was most important for me. ...In all my other servers (Proxmox etc) I don't bother with ECC RAM normally tbh mainly as they run Intel i5 or i7 and ECC support isn't available without going Xeon on Intel. ECC (specifically UDIMM as RDIMM won't work on these motherboards) was pretty cheap from [Scan.co.uk](https://Scan.co.uk) \- I'll link the RAM when I get home (at work atm and not 100% sure which one it was but can confirm later) For the PSU I went with a Corsair 750W (mainly as I'm running 8x 3.5 HDD's, 4x SSD's and a Quadro P1000 + HBA Controller. - The PSU was on sale so got a good deal on it - I can confirm the link for that too when I get home - If that helps too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-12 08:26 /r/HomeServer /r/Homelab and /r/BuildaPC exist... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfhosted-ModTeam · 2023-10-12 09:23 This post is being removed due to the subject not being related to the "selfhosted" theme of the community.
