Moving from W11 to Proxmox w/Unraid reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Noob_HL · 2023-10-11 18:48 So I am currently running a plex server from a W11 machine. I am using Stablebit Drivepool to aggregate 12 drives of various sizes (5x14TB, 4x8TB, 3x4TB) into a single media pool that Plex reads from. I am also using [Stablebit Scanner](https://stablebit.com/Scanner/Features) to monitor drive health. From just a pure storage perspective how much effort is it to accomplish the same type of monitoring/scanning on Unraid? I am assuming it has to have tools specifically for this. Also, I assume I would be using BTRFS or XFS for the file system if I just want a single pool, correct? Or are you able to use multiple pools for a single share? Ideally I would like to run ProxmoxVE and virtualize Unraid because there are other services I want to run as VMs/LXC and I don’t want to use Unraid for that. How large of a hit would it be to have Plex in a different VM from Unraid? I imagine that they would be talking over their emulated network connections but aside from latency there shouldn’t be a huge hit from doing that in terms of playback performance on client systems, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-11 18:57 There is almost no performance difference between what you have now and Plex in a VM (I would run Plex as a container though). If you need hardware transcoding and your CPU supports it you can pass that through to the VM or container. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-11 18:58 [A starting point.](https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/zw9q 5k/should_i_switch_from_stablebit_drivepool_and/) Consider what features you need from Drivepool and can't live without. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Noob_HL · 2023-10-11 19:00 Yeah, hardware passthrough will be necessary. I was just going to pass my A2000 through to use for SDR tone mapping and transcoding. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-11 19:05 /r/unRAID ---------------------------------------------------------------------- epsiblivion · 2023-10-12 01:42 if you are using proxmox, why not zfs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Noob_HL · 2023-10-12 02:13 Would I be able to pool drives similarly to how Stablebit allows me to do it with zfs? The way things read for UnRaid made it look like BTRFS or XFS were the systems to use for that. I am not at all familiar with the various non-windows file systems. It didn’t seem like zfs was a good fit for a single pool of varying sized drives but I am always interested in learning more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- znutarr · 2023-10-13 00:19 You can pool drives with mdadm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- znutarr · 2023-10-13 00:20 Use btrfs and mdadm for pooling drives
