Selfhosted TV channel project reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-11 16:49 Idk if the title is accurate I'm a part time lurker so I don't really have much knowledge 0 experience in docker, linux, etc. Basically over the past few months I've been building a library of content full of my favorite tv shows and movies and compiled them into 4 channels through Dizquetv. Basically I have it setup where I have full weekly lineups with some shows playing on certain days. The main 2 channels PESOTV Central and Pacific have blocks for Wednesdays, Fridays, and both Saturdays and Sundays. Wednesday nights is action tv and movies. rn I have Preacher, Happy, and Netflix Daredevil playing for the lineup with an action movie on shuffle at the end of the night. Fridays is the same but horror instead, Saturdays is anime and Sundays is mostly big budget tv like Game of Thrones, Sopranos, Fargo. The 3rd channel is TOON PESO 24/7 cartoons and anime with the more mature shows playing at night. Peso Cinema is just 24/7 movies. I've spent the past few months making a bunch of commercials for the channel so there's something to fill up time between shows for that full tv experience. At this point I've made about 70 or 80 of them so legality aside this is my art project now lol. Below are some screenshots of the channel and links to the bumpers I've made https://imgur.com/gallery/lrEjHy7 [https://youtu.be/7HLD0MOlasg](https://youtu.be/7HLD0MOlasg) [https://youtu.be/DqgosIonqtI](https://youtu.be/DqgosIonqtI) [https://youtu.be/o3LKfHDfAhE](https://youtu.be/o3LKfHDfAhE) Now with that explained what I need help is on actually broadcasting the service to people outside of plex, mostly so my friends and family back home can tune in and watch from time to time, but I want it easy for them. Something where they can just go to a site or something. So basically is there a way that I can broadcast my channels. I've looked into this service called Owncast but I'm having trouble getting the server itself going. But from what I understand I just need a web domain, server, and streaming program at this point? As far as bandwidth goes I'm thinking about purchasing R2 storage from cloudlfare and having the main content stored and exported there so my main server doesn't shit out on me. idk let me know what y'all think. I'm still new to this but I've been motivated for the better part of a year to get this project going. I've been a longtime fan of Toonami aftermath which is what mostly inspired me to make all this to begin with. If you're looking to help out lmk I would greatly appreciate it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PinkCigarette · 2023-10-11 19:49 I don't have any solutions but man, those bumpers you created are legit! I just started messing around with dizquetv a little while back but I don't have anything nearly as polished as yours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BourbonXenon · 2023-10-11 20:12 These projects seem to not have any recent activity, so if things aren't working, you may be out of luck. The wiki for dizqueTV has an article that suggests the use of another project (xTeVe) that proxies the stream. The linked bug in the article has been fixed by the xTeVe project, so you can try whichever option works best for you. https://github.com/vexorian/dizquetv/wiki/Notes-regarding-sharing-the- IPTV-stream-with-remote-computers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretaryOfDefensin · 2023-10-11 20:25 I'm curious -- how did you negotiate the rights for all of those shows? That's pretty impressive. It must be costing you a fortune. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-11 22:38 Hey thanks dude! I've been messing around with a lot of video editing apps on my phone trying to get the right aesthetic for my channel. I'm basically going for Adult Swim's crackhead cousin. I'll be uploading more to my channel I like to compile all the bumpers I've made into comps. Can't believe I never uploaded these ones [https://youtu.be/\_T0Smp\_QJxo](https://youtu.be/_T0Smp_QJxo) https://youtu.be/yRyzdT7ws3A ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-11 22:43 Hey thanks for the reply! I completely forgot about this back when I was trying ErsatzTV but I really didn't know what I was doing LOL. So basically use this if I plan on providing the direct m3u link? Ideally I'd like to put enough money to get a site going so ppl can tune in ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-11 22:44 Haha I gave them an offer they couldn't refuse! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- instinkt900 · 2023-10-12 01:47 Looks like you and I are on similar paths. I've been messing with ErsatzTV rather than DizqueTV and my wish is to have bumpers and commercials for the vibe also. The best I have so far is some music videos and a short random video for filler. I've been debating on whether to just find these things online or to bite the bullet and take the time to make my own. Though I would like to find a collection of old TV commercials and build a channel that's kind of stuck in time from my childhood and that will require some archeology and I'm not sure if it'll be possible. These look great though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-12 03:04 Thanks for the feedback dude I highly recommend it! Originally i didn't know anything about video editing but its surprisingly really easy to do on mobile. Everything from the clips downloaded to the font to the video itself was all done on my phone. If you have android I would recommend downloading newpipe apk and using that to get clips of whatever series or movie you wanna make commercials for. The file sizes are stupid small and fast to download and its all in 1080p. Music videos are for sure a solid choice I do the same for my movie channel or for when theres lots of downtime. I did originally start with old commercials that I downloaded from youtube. You can also find a ton of old footage on the internet archive! I would recommend using powerdirector pro as your video editor. I signed up for the year for like 25 bucks and ngl it was worth. App is easy to use and when you get pro it comes with tons of free stock footage. Plus no watermarks! I'll probably upload more comps to YT feel free to subscribe for updates. Eventually I'd like to have a free site up so tune in! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jesusrambo · 2023-10-12 03:57 Stupid but genuine question — what’s the appeal of this vs on demand streaming like plex? I dig the idea as a concept, but I’m having a hard time imagining the use case ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 05:36 I am not OP but seeing this makes me want to do it now. I would say sometimes there isn't a big use case other than to share his creativity with people. It would also be hilarious to have a Live TV channel like GTA Radio, where it has the comedy commercials and stuff. Again though I am not OP but I think this idea is sick! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 05:40 So an idea that comes to mind for me would be hosting a 24/7 YouTube stream or twitch stream, you can then host and create a basic website, or a complex one that’s up to you, but you just embed the streams into the website and bam you have a website for your personal tv channels! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jesusrambo · 2023-10-12 05:47 Just being creative is a totally valid and fun reason, nothing wrong with that :) I respect that! I feel like something like this would be nice to avoid the “100 channels but nothing to watch” decision paralysis. Like when you want to watch a mindless show, but can’t decide which. But tuning in partway into something feels like the sticky part to me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 06:07 Yeah that is definitely true, it feels bad however I do know both my parents like to have the TV on in the background while they work from home and stuff, it could be just a good use as background noise but instead of random shows from normal networks, it’s from the programming you picked? Could be a good use case too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jesusrambo · 2023-10-12 06:28 Yeah, I like that! Something to leave on while I play games or clean. Alright, now I know what I’m doing this weekend 😄 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guardian1691 · 2023-10-12 06:40 Dizque and xteve provide links to the channels. VLC can open those links as a stream. You just need to make sure you've enabled access from outside of the network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nephtyz · 2023-10-12 07:01 I've always wanted to put up a 24/7 stream of Futurama like in the old days of winamp shoutcast streams! I'll check out Dizquetv, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nephtyz · 2023-10-12 07:03 You must be fun at parties ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neal1231 · 2023-10-12 07:54 Hey, I can't exactly show you my setup right now since I'm in the middle of a rebuild/upgrade but I'm running something similar to you! I built a few channels but I've been able to build home-recreations of 24/7 Adult Swim and Toonami with old bumpers and a few commercials implemented. I have a docker container with ErsatzTV that has GPU access that creates the IPTV streams and the guide data that can then be imported into whatever local service you have. I am able to pipe all of my channels directly into Emby with the guide data and everyone can access it. It looks like you are starting from scratch so you probably don't have access to a bunch of equipment. If you have one, I recommend using an old desktop/laptop you have lying around and installing Ubuntu (or something else you want to try) and setup a few things. Minimum, you need a Pi (or other extra devices you have) but you won't be able to run too many channels at too high of a resolution. You can take the output from whatever IPTV service you use and plug it into VLC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isThisRight-- · 2023-10-12 10:17 I’m not sure that this is a 100% solution, but I think VLC has the ability to stream a playlist to a URL… or at least one video, you could potentially set the URL and give them two. Then they open whichever they prefer… otherwise, I want to know the answer too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretaryOfDefensin · 2023-10-12 11:34 There's a big difference between sharing a Plax server and broadcasting multiple channels 24/7. OP will likely wind up being sued out of existance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VenJules · 2023-10-12 12:20 use a web domain, server, and streaming program, and services like Owncast or Plausible Analytics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 12:33 It also does depend on if he’s attempting ti make income from it, even if he were to get sued he would likely just get asked to take it down and then the suit would go away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretaryOfDefensin · 2023-10-12 12:36 Income would turn it into a felony. A civil suit would still hit him for millions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 12:59 I don’t know, I would really doubt they would pursue millions from one dude streaming a couple channels to his friends as an art project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SecretaryOfDefensin · 2023-10-12 13:09 I truly hope you're right. And I don't think media sharing should be treated the way it currently is (worse penalties than violent crimes). But having been sued by Lucasfilm myself, I know first-hand that some of the studios are out for blood. Keep an eye on Torrentfreak to see the (absurd) judgments that are coming down. When it comes to the U.S., downloading things is fine, but broadcasting, even in a limited way, is very, very risky. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dalem246 · 2023-10-12 14:13 Of course you are right it is very risky, I think then the safest would be to put the channels behind an authentication system on his site and use a VPN to host it, that way it would be the safest he can possibly make it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s_91 · 2023-10-14 10:12 Late but you can try [ErsatzTV](https://github.com/ErsatzTV/ErsatzTV). 1. Create a channel on ErsatzTV. 2. Have your content already pre-encoded for example (H264 for video/AAC for audio). All modern browsers and apps can play it. Some older devices might struggle with H265 videos and that could mean either it won't play for your viewers or ErsatzTV will try to transcode those files and use additional CPU resources. 3. ErsatzTV will give you a .m3u8 file and .xml file that has the schedule of your programs. I think it needs Jellyfin too, please read more in the [docs](https://ersatztv.org/docs/intro). 4. Using a VPS, host a simple page "as a start" that has a video player (like [Plyr](https://plyr.io/) - [VideoJs](https://videojs.com/) - using the .m3u8 file as the source). Read more about serving HLS content on web pages. Simple HTML file, hosting it on a webserver like nginx. 5. Distribute the web page links for friends and family. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PESOPESO97 · 2023-10-22 03:32 Wow I didn't expect this post to blow up holy shit! If you guys are interested in watching the stream I have it up for now playing nothing but Halloween movies and specials until the rest of the month. Come join the stream! https://discord.gg/sYewtKBK
