remotely restart vps reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imKumo · 2023-10-11 14:51 I don't know if this this stills falls under r/selfhosted. I've bought a vps which works great for my docker containers and as custom dns. The only downsight I encountered is, that the supplier gives no good option for remotely restarting the server other than loading into recovery system and back (which takes a couple hours). This is sometimes needed because the server appears to be frozen and no connection via ssh could be done. So my question is, is there any good method for remotely restarting my vps? The only method I could thought of is sending a reboot command to the server via a website with PHP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ace0spades808 · 2023-10-11 15:08 If the server freezes like you suspect though then that won't work either. If just the networking gets hosed up then you could do something like have it constantly ping somewhere and whenever it doesn't get a response for 10 minutes or whatever it reboots. But if the whole system gets frozen I would just report it to the provider and see if they can fix it. If they can't then I would look for another provider - that's a dealbreaker imo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-10-11 15:36 Ask them for hardware console access. Many providers give that access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imKumo · 2023-10-11 15:46 the first few times the ssh service blocked itself cause there were a lot of request from Chinese IP's, which I solved by moving the ssh port. But now I don't really know why this happens. I could ask my provider what could be he issue, I think that's my next way to go. And I don't really wanna break the deal as I get a good handful of resources for a cheap price. but thanks for ping idea, I will try to get that to work. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent_Till5832 · 2023-10-11 15:55 I hope you use fail2ban or crowdsec and ufwdocker . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imKumo · 2023-10-11 16:07 after all what happened, yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-10-12 05:30 No use if its literally locking up completely, but I just have a reboot option on my server's OliveTin web UI. Makes it easy to reboot stuff just from my phone etc. and would likely work for you.
