Self hosted vs VPS for my use case reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate_Ad4933 · 2023-10-11 08:01 Hello everyone, I'm in the process of developing a webGIS application tailored for LiDAR (3D point cloud) data processing and mapping. For optimal functionality, it's crucial that the app delivers high performance. Currently, it's built on Node.js using Express.js and runs locally on my machine. However, I'm considering deployment options. One challenge I'm facing is the resource-intensive nature of point cloud processing. On my current setup with 32GB RAM, processing consumes nearly 96% of the memory. I've tested it on a 16GB RAM setup as well, and while it works, the processing speed significantly drops. I've researched several VPS options, but the configurations that match my requirements, especially with 24/7 availability, are quite costly. I'm torn between investing in a more powerful personal computer for self-hosting or opting for a VPS. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-11 08:37 What does costly mean to you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomistruth · 2023-10-11 08:44 There are dedicated cloud gpu providers with cuda support, prices ranging from 20ct to 2$/h. Always scale on demand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate_Ad4933 · 2023-10-11 09:16 Thank you for your answer, but I don't use GPU and cuda for the data processing, everything is done by the CPU ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WantDollarsPlease · 2023-10-11 14:48 You're not getting 24/7 availability running something on your home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SamSausages · 2023-10-11 16:00 This really depends on your budget, how much time you want to allot to management and your ability to manage the resource. If you love to tinker like me, than self hosting is almost a no- brainer. But server admin isn't something that you enjoy, or if it's going that will take you away from running more important parts of your business, then it's a hard no. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamsz · 2023-10-11 16:21 presumably you aren't processing the point cloud very often and don't need that available very often. Can you structure it so that your front end server puts those jobs into something like an Amazon Simple Queue Service queue, then that spins up an EC2 instance to do the processing work and then shuts it down again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4x4Anarchy · 2023-10-11 23:47 Where are your bottlenecks? Is it data processing, querying? For reference I do something similar with GIS data and run on a < $20/mo VPS droplet. I have a few tables that are 1GB in size and I've had to make extensive optimizations, relying on well-structured indexes, caching mechanisms, and query optimization to enhance performance.
