semi-new to self hosting, having trouble building from git clone reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-10 22:39 So im fairly new to self hosting, using all the amazing guides here ive managed to build a proxmox server im proud of with jellyfin, nginx, hiemdall, and a few more. But ill be honest, most of those were pretty straight forward with tons of extra support. im currently working on launching [Watch Party](https://github.com/howardchung/watchparty) which starts the instructions at git clone. ive been trying debian 12 and have been learning along the way but i feel there is soo much missing from the instructions for a novice like me.(ex. idk how to change the env, config, or ports and i cant open new shells). How would i change all the settings needed to properly deploy? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr · 2023-10-10 23:00 >idk how to change the env, Usually there is some kind of `.env` file in the folder you get after running git clone, in this case it's `example.env`. Copy or rename that to `.env` - e.g. by running `mv example.env .env` . Then edit it in your editor of choice and set the settings you want. What this file does is hold the configuration of your app. So when you start it, and even while running it, it'll rely on that `.env` file to get the information it needs to work properly. Usually you can leave most stuff at defaults, unless it's said otherwise in the documentation. >and i cant open new shells This usually means just opening a new terminal window. In proxmox this is indeed not possible afaik, but you can always enable ssh and use that to connect to your VM or LXC. If you have never done that, now is the perfect time to learn. Using ssh is one of the most crucial parts so I'd start there. Honestly, the rest is mostly trial and error and/or a lot of reading and testing. There is no definitive guide on how to learn things, see what works best for you to learn that stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-10 23:05 ok so i can run seperate command lines from something like putty? for the env theres not much to edit like in nginx `# See config.ts for list of server config variables` `# Look for REACT_APP_* for client config variables` `NODE_ENV=development` `YOUTUBE_API_KEY=REPLACE_ME` `REACT_APP_FIREBASE_CONFIG={"apiKey":"AIzaSyA2fkXeFokJ-Ei_jnzDso5AmjbI aMdzuEc","authDomain":"watchparty- 273604.firebaseapp.com","databaseURL":"https://watchparty- 273604.firebaseio.com","projectId":"watchparty- 273604","storageBucket":"watchparty- 273604.appspot.com","messagingSenderId":"769614672795","appId":"1:7696 14672795:web:54bbda86288ab1a034273e"}` `# FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK_CONFIG=REPLACE_ME` `# DATABASE_URL=postgresql://postgres@localhost:5432/postgres?sslmode= disable` `# REDIS_URL=localhost:6379` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-10 23:50 https://github.com/howardchung/watchparty/issues Ask there? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-11 00:11 maybe i didnt phrase it right but im looking for more general help with basics since the other app i want to run [https://github.com/unlock-protocol/cloudflare- worker](https://github.com/unlock-protocol/cloudflare-worker) has similar instructions which leads me to believe there is a huge gap in my knowledge. typically when i install something, the pre-reqs are outlined, simple commands to run the app with setup during the install, detailed instructions and locations of what to edit if needed, and usually the ip/port to connect to. ive never installed something via git clone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-11 03:49 If you have trouble with very basic commands then i would suggest you learn those and consult for example /r/LinuxQuestions and /r/Linux4Noobs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rocket1420 · 2023-10-11 04:09 fchown errors would indicate a file permissions issue. I would also say you need to change those REPLACE_MEs and generate a new firebase and expire the one you left in this message. If that's there like that by default, then you probably need to create a firebase db with the instructions on that page. I'm only answering your general "how do I" questions because I've never used Watch Party. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr · 2023-10-11 09:17 >ok so i can run seperate command lines from something like putty? Yes, correct. And the env doesn't need to change much, but refer to the docs how to obtain the `YOUTUBE_API_KEY` for example. Same for postgresql and firebase. It looks complicated now, but it's also a great learning experience, as those are mostly the standards you'll need here and there. So once you understood how to set this all up, you're good to do even bigger projects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-11 22:25 thanks for the help, putty did help but the ultimate problem was the `npm audit fix --force` command. although it does warn about breaking, but i figured better safe than sorry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-11 22:30 Appreciate the help! i'm still working on figuring out firebase lol but i have successfully deployed the watchparty(without signin). the ultimate issue was running `npm audit fix --force` and to be fair it does warn about breaking. Running `npm audit fix` by itself is just fine and imo recommended but idk about the vulnerabilities aspect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hornlesscow · 2023-10-11 22:37 no worries, the people here to help offered their advice and i was able to get it up and running. if you want to continue being an unhelpful ass though, i would suggest you do so on r/asshat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-11 23:32 *How cute, good luck in the future, but im sure you will often be so lucky to find people who arent bothered by you and offer to hold your hand when youre asking questions where they clearly dont belong. And how do i even even dare to link you to the Github and recommend two very useful subreddits. How dare i, really unhelpful.* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- penalSeparation · 2023-10-12 10:54 You can launch more then one instance of putty on the same server if required
