Just starting out, suggestions? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Apart-Ad-6659 · 2023-10-10 15:05 Hi I recently got a server running ubuntu from my dad, i have no idea where i can use this for or how. Any suggestions for starting projects? I was also thinking about making a music bot for my discord server on which i can play songs from youtube/soundcloud since all music bots suck. Is this achievable with a server? and if so can anyone send me any leads on where to start ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gazbill · 2023-10-10 15:22 Here is a very comprehensive list: [https://github.com/awesome- selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted](https://github.com/awesome- selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted) Personally, I have a stack of around 20 applications running under Docker, of those a few important ones - media streaming (Plex), home automation (Home Assistant), DNS (Adguard Home) and ARR stack (Radarr, Sonarr etc). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spazonator · 2023-10-10 17:46 Before the days of ubiquitous internet on phones this is how I listened to my music on the school computers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-10 18:02 > Any suggestions for starting projects? https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=get+started&restrict_sr=o n&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=beginner&restrict_sr=on&i nclude_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=bored&restrict_sr=on&incl ude_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unofficialtech · 2023-10-10 18:39 Start off with email. Don't forget to only allow ingress via a VPS via VPN, disable SSH and make sure you have at least 8tb storage and 192gb RAM. Place everything behind reverse proxy and ensure no SSH access. just kidding. Absolutely do not get too concerned out of the gate on perfection. Best thing to start out with is something that provides value to you. That could be Plex, or Airsonic. Backup and document configs - be prepared to rebuild EVERYTHING at any time. I'd recommend either learning docker or if your PC has the beef getting good with VM's so that you can avoid reinstalling your core system when something breaks one service, you aren't rebuilding/resetting 5. Take a slow approach to web access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zealousideal_Corgi22 · 2023-10-10 19:21 You could find some projects on here for Discord Music Bots you can selfhost. https://github.com/topics/discord-music-bot
