cloud backups for movies reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rafa130397 · 2023-10-10 13:33 Hey! I have a quick question, what do you guys use to backup up your movies/tv shows/content? I just learned about iDrive and thought that this would be cheaper than to have a raid since if a drive fails, I could just download the missing content from the cloud. It is subscription based but I think it is super cool. What are your thoughts? Can I upload movies? Would I have any problems? Am I missing anything? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ArfbarkyPrime · 2023-10-10 13:44 I am lucky because work gives me Dropbox unlimited for free. Then I use [rclone](https://rclone.org/) to keep all video in Dropbox, inside a nested encrypted area (so Dropbox can't see what's in it). What's nice is with a reasonably fast Internet connection, you can just stream content out via rclone rather than even store it locally at all. Lots of people do this with Plex for example, but rclone has a built-in DLNA server too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XxNerdAtHeartxX · 2023-10-10 13:50 Other people's seedboxes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- levogevo · 2023-10-10 13:58 How are you using a work account for personal use... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExpertPath · 2023-10-10 14:20 Whatever you upload, just keep in mind that the "Cloud" is just someone else's computer. Don't upload anything you don't want others to see. Also, encryption should be standard! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-10 15:15 I honestly I don't since you can download everything again. Films and TV are for me, not important data, also good luck backing up more than 200TB for cheap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moarmagic · 2023-10-10 16:19 So when you say subscription is cheaper- it's all a question of how long and how much. And if the cloud provider ever changes prices or terms of service. Idrive currently charges 70 a year for 5 tb. A 5tb external off amazon or newegg may cost 100. (And you might get better deals, I'm not researching it deeply). So I drive is cheaper for one year, but if you keep it for 2 years, buying an external drive is cheaper. As other people said as well, mass media isn't usually as critical to do cloud backs etc, so assuming you are buying new drives, I wouldn't worry as much imabout a drive dying, if everything on it can be reacquires. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rafa130397 · 2023-10-10 16:22 I see your point. However, if I have a backup in a disk at home, when it fails, I will have lost everything there (assuming no RAID or similar). So when using cloud, I am not only paying for storage, but also for reliability right? On top of that, where I live drives aren’t cheap at all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-10-10 18:12 RAID is not a backup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d4nm3d · 2023-10-10 19:08 you're better off visiting /r/datahoarder ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsme_sangamkr · 2023-10-10 20:43 Storj ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FeedSilver9062 · 2023-10-10 20:59 Don't. Worst case I can rebuild. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jajeiadfadmvee · 2023-10-11 09:51 Storj + Rclone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PoSaP · 2023-10-17 20:06 Backblaze offers two options.
