Managed to get Jellyfin to work outside of my network. Now, how can I have a Torguard VPN running while allowing Jellyfin library to be shared with others? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- showersareevil · 2023-10-08 14:36 I followed [this guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbmgOxPwQA0) to share my Jellyfin server with others outside of my home, and it works like a charm. I also like running Torguard VPN quite often to seed and download more things. But very understandably, when the VPN is running, the Jellyfin server isn't available to others outside of my network. How easy is it to have the VPN run and have Jellyfin available to everyone at the same time? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnualOasis · 2023-10-08 14:39 You’d need a split tunnel where only the torrent software is sent through the VPN. I’m not sure if the torguard app has this capability. I’m unfamiliar with the service. This is partially why people generally host services in containers, either using something like LXCs or dockers, or VMs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- showersareevil · 2023-10-08 14:43 Thanks for the straightforward answer. Seems like it's not built into their client, but since I'm running wireguard, I may be able to find a way to make it work. Sounds pretty complicated though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-08 14:45 Try with a wireguard container and an attached client container on the same docker network and work yourself up from there. Or install the VPN on your router and use policy based routing to route traffic from certain clients via VPN or stop torrenting amd start using UseNet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnualOasis · 2023-10-08 14:55 You can try wireguard + your own custom config creating the split tunnel. The easier solution is probably virtualbox + lubuntu + installing torguard and your torrent client in the vm. torguard has deb files so it should work on any Debian based distro and lubuntu is probably the lightest out of the box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- showersareevil · 2023-10-08 14:58 The main issue here is my absolute lack of understanding of networking and server principles. I can follow guides pretty well, like installing a VPN on a router running openWRT or that youtube guide I linked to setup Jellyfin for external networks. I'm also very much enjoying 800mbps download speeds through wireguard, and I know it'll be a fraction of that if my Netgear AX1800 router is running the VPN. It'll either be significant compromises, or hours upon hours of trying to learn networking and other skills that's required to make this work the way I want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-08 15:04 Learning new skills makes you are more valuable asset and is always a very good thing. Time invested into learning is never time wasted. Start as I mentioned with a two container setup, one container connecting to your VPN provider and the other one utilizing said container to access the internet via its VPN. If you manage to do that you can manage to configure what you need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- showersareevil · 2023-10-08 16:07 I fully agree with your sentiment. My concern is that it will be a frustrating experience when I have a specific goal in mind that I want to accomplish and don't even know what client containers or docker networks are lol. I found this guide to help me setup wireguard split tunneling, it seems to work like a charm! [https://superuser.com/questions/1658610/how-do-i-disable-routing- table-changes-in-wireguard-for- windows](https://superuser.com/questions/1658610/how-do-i-disable- routing-table-changes-in-wireguard-for-windows) Now my only concern is, how can I verify that my torrent client is actually using the VPN? My IP is showing as the actual IP, not VPN on chrome, and this is expected with successful split tunneling. But, how can I check what iP the torrent client has? All the bandwidth that is being used by the torrent client is going through the wireguard and I have it only use wg0 setup, so if I were to turn wireguard off, the internet to torrent client would stop too. I guess I just want to double verify this is working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deteknician · 2023-10-08 16:19 Add a 2nd network interface? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DeusExMaChino · 2023-10-08 17:10 The easiest way is probably to run your torrent client in a container that also has support for your VPN service or use something like gluetun so that only containers you choose are routed through the VPN. Otherwise, look into VPN split tunneling.
