Extremely Dumb Person Self-Hosted Personal Wiki on a Free Cloud Service reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shawnanigans · 2023-10-08 11:43 I love Notion; Outline and AppFlowy look like awesome self-hosted options to build a personal wiki. But I tried for 3 days to even figure out how to connect to a couple SSH only VM providers (Oracle was beyond me...) Are there any guides that are step by step or easier ways to self-host similar tools? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-08 12:04 Don't rely on guides. Try each step with some small guidance yourself. - How to connect via SSH to a Linux system - How to install podman - How to run a container - Run your first simple webserver container - Run your first reverse proxy in front of your webserver - Get your first SSL certificate from Letsencrypt - ... Take each step, once you can do and understand all these stepps setting up an app will be easy, but don't try to do it all from the start. Small baby steps, not giant leaps by copy & paste some commands or code from the web. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shawnanigans · 2023-10-08 12:37 Is it really all these steps just to be effective at self-hosting? Damn. I think I might be too far from the finish line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-08 12:43 Sure you can follow a guide, copy & paste everything, but understand none of it or you could try what I suggested. Yes it takes longer but what you will have learned you can then apply and use n other settings too. There is no such thing as knowing too much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- radakul · 2023-10-08 13:32 It gets so much deeper. Self hosting is not plug and play - thats what "as a Service" offerings do - you sign up and someone else handles all the backend crap, security, etc. All the stuff you do to "correctly" self host is pretty much what systems administrators do, and these are folks usually making 6 figures, so take that as you may. It's a fun hobby if you enjoy learning, tweaking and enjoy the control of managing your own services. Comes with the downsides of needing to keep track of security, patching, vulnerabilities, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-08 17:38 If you don’t want to invest considerable amount of time, don’t self host. You will put something insecure on a 1 Gig internet connection waiting to be attacked, taken over and sent spam with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-10-08 20:10 If you have issues already with ssh I suggest to take the r/linuxupskillchallenge to pick up the basics of Linux administration. Then and only then go for selfhosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-08 21:37 I'm not sure why you're being downvoted, that seems like a sane response. Selfhosting an application well, requires a substantial amount of learning. Unless you are interested in that learning, just pay someone else the $$ per month and save yourself a bunch of heartache. That said, if you want to learn, this forum is full of people who will help you. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pq473 · 2023-10-08 23:07 If you are just looking for some sort of self hosted wiki solution you should check out Obsidian.md. I sync my vault between my computer and android phone using synching so it's always current on my devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- doctor-ase · 2023-10-09 08:18 It's possible to run obsidian in docker? How is the android app, is good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pq473 · 2023-10-13 21:09 Android app takes some getting used to for navigating but its not bad. Pretty smooth for every note I have even with embedded images or other files. Its a GUI app so not sure if it would work in docker, you could setup syncthing in docker iirc if that's what your asking for the sync portion. https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/syncthing
