Cpanel for some sites and plain old conf files for others? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- carmerica · 2023-10-07 12:33 I Host using NginX/MySQL conf files etc (20yrs now!) and have a few paid clients that winge about wanting that Cpanel! Does anyone run Cpanel for just a few sites but edit conf files for others? I really don't want to end up spinning another server up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-10-07 13:03 > I really don't want to end up spinning another server up. Unfortunate, because this is the right way about it  —  either a new server, or, at least, a VM. There are many reasons why you wouldn't want cPanel + non-cPanel software on the same system. For one thing, cPanel needs access to the web server (duh), but if you're running cPanel's webserver (lightspeed?) you aren't (obviously) serving your vanilla nginx. Plus there are all of the system automation tasks. Plus cPanel creates root jails for users —  I would not feel comfortable with that alongside my normal environment. Oh and then there's licensing stuff, too. Just create a separate VM on your existing hardware, or run another server. Oh and tell your clients to either pay you for the $20/month license fee, or tell them to learn Vim. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- carmerica · 2023-10-07 14:16 Thanks yep, it has insulated me from a lot of developers trying to take over the websites over the years. haha they ask for Cpanel access and I say ah sorry none but here is SSH to the user account :) I was hoping it was something like Webmin that could just manage single websites. Problem with Virtualmin etc is that most developers and end users already have some exposure to Cpanel and it does make migrations and things easier for them. Will get another Lightsail going.
