Seeking Alternative to iTunes/Spotify/YTMusic reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:19 I have been running Jellyfin for a few years now and I love it. But when it comes to music files (mp3,off,flac) it doesn't quiet measure up. So I am looking for a media server for my massive piles of CDs I have collected over the last 30+ years, which I have ripped everything. I want to be able to listen on my phone, android TV and my Debian laptop. So it needs decent to good clients. Other needs are building my own playlists, which as kid from the 80s and 90s I still call mix tapes. I want to have it automatically sort by artist, album and genre for me. Basically WinAmp from back in the day, but so I can stream it via my local network or the internet. I have a public IP. Any suggestions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jealy · 2023-10-06 21:21 Plex & Plexamp? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-10-06 21:22 Navidrome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent_Emu5190 · 2023-10-06 21:27 Winamp isn’t completely dead…. I use this daily and it’s actively developed. https://getwacup.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:33 No, looking for something that from server to client is designed for music. And I prefer FOSS. So I can edit the source code if I want to change something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:33 But it wants windows and it won't stream to my phone and TV. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:34 I shall take a look. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jealy · 2023-10-06 21:34 Np, add that info to the OP. Hope there's something available for ya! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:37 Thank you. This looks like it will suit my requirements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:38 I remember in the 90s I had two winamps running, each with a pitch and nudge plugin a wrote, and that fed out two sound cards into my mixing desk, and that was how I DJed at a club I was resident at. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tirefires · 2023-10-06 21:41 [mpd](https://www.musicpd.org/) on the server side. One of many clients depending on what kind of devices you're trying to use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-10-06 21:44 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:44 Will check it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:46 This has a nice and established ecosystem. Definitely a strong contender. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:48 Edit has been made. I actually now have two good contenders to try out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-06 21:49 Made the edit on OP. Thanks, I now have 2 strong contenders to try out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tirefires · 2023-10-06 21:51 You're welcome. I used to use ncmpcpp on my laptop and M.A.L.P. on my phone. ncmpcpp is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. M.A.L.P. was sometimes temperamental, but it's been several years since I tried it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wdrussell1 · 2023-10-06 22:13 What player would likely be best with this for my phone? The ability to have music offline included. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- luckygoose56 · 2023-10-06 22:22 Symfonium ---------------------------------------------------------------------- az_shoe · 2023-10-06 22:33 Agreed, big time. Great app, and the dev is very responsive. I noticed a small thing and emailed him, and he emailed me back and added a fix the for the next release. Awesome stuff! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiro24 · 2023-10-07 00:25 Is ampache still a thing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jmshub · 2023-10-07 00:56 Plexamp is a fantastic music player. It is my favorite way to play music on my phone. FYI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OneToCrowOn · 2023-10-07 01:28 MAFA on Android is awesome. I feel like it makes all the hidden bells and whistles of mpd available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- levogevo · 2023-10-07 03:07 What's wrong with jellyfin? Using symfonium as the player, and it functions as expected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zupobaloop · 2023-10-07 05:00 I can appreciate that, but it's still a bit of a shame... because Plexamp is such a unique and feature rich client for a self-hosted music library. I'm mostly commenting so future searchers might note this. I respect that your goals are different. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-07 06:15 Dunno. Will investigate ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-07 06:16 I just don't have functionality I am looking for with JF as a music library. But for video it is tops. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-07 08:24 It is still there, but after spending sometime on the site I don't think it will meet my needs. However, as it is a FOSS option, I will install it and test it out. I will provide feed back in the OP on the merits of each contender I test. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-10-07 16:28 And for a client for your laptop, check out \[Supersonic\]([https://gi thub.com/dweymouth/supersonic](https://github.com/dweymouth/supersonic ))! (A bit of self-promotion; I'm the dev) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djc_tech · 2023-10-07 18:05 I live PlexAmp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SelectCase · 2023-10-07 18:35 Apache should meet all of the requirements in your OP. The subsonic API makes it work in almost every ecosystem. There's plenty of Android supporting subsonic clients that can connect to it. Clementine/strawberry has native strawberry support. The Web UI isn't pretty, but it is functional. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItzyWitzy · 2023-10-07 19:01 I'm using Navidrome and on Android I'm using Symfonium as the player ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Independent_Emu5190 · 2023-10-07 20:26 Yep…. Apologies - was on mobile and didn’t see the entire post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -SHINSTER007 · 2023-10-08 03:29 Looks cool I'll give it a try ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zee_G68 · 2023-10-08 04:12 Check out Roon. It’s a music server, it will recognize all your music, add loads of metadata, help you with music suggestions, it his apps on mobile devices and even one called Arc to have you listen to your music outside your LAN. Finally, you can add a couple of streaming services like Tidal or Qobuz and it excells at sound processing/enhancing. It’s not for free, but it’s by far the best music server I ever used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gravelld · 2023-10-09 13:48 Disclaimer: this is the commercial software I operate. If you have a public IP you could use r/Astiga \- you can point it at your self hosted server, if it has a WebDAV endpoint - and have it stream anywhere, and sync to devices etc. Let me know if it fulfills your criteria, or if we need to improve/add something! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SurvivorOfTheCentury · 2023-10-09 20:17 You might want to consider plexamp as "maybe". I've ditched Plex years back due to library got corrupt a few times. I've recently installed it and ripped about 200 cd's, it worked smooth, very nice. Until it now decided to change "album artist" on all albums to "haddaway" I just find Plex to be utterly trollish. I'd go with Navidrome, not really superb alternative to plexamp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisiszeev · 2023-10-10 17:46 For the same reason I don't use Plex as my media server. I am 100% open source. The best thing with Open Source is I have the source code, I can make changes and improvements.
