How can I access my NAS without disconnecting it from a VPN? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mel2ywn · 2023-10-06 09:38 I have a NAS at home, and I used to access it from outside my local network using [Netmaker](https://www.netmaker.io/). It was perfect because I'm not exactly a tech guru, and Netmaker made remote access super easy. However, a few months ago, I started using qbittorrent in a Docker container. I read some recommendations on this subreddit and others suggesting that it's safer to use a VPN while torrenting. So, I went ahead and set up a VPN on my NAS to keep my torrenting activities secure. I chose one and setted it up on the NAS so it could torrent safely. And then It hit me, I didn't realize that since my NAS is now using a VPN, my own Netmaker VPN couldn't be used. Do I have to choose between a VPN for torrenting or having my own VPN to access my NAS remotely? Is there another way to access it without needing to touch the VPN? Or can I configure it so only the qbittorrent container uses the VPN and the rest is open? I don't know if that makes sense. Thank you so much for your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bap420 · 2023-10-06 10:46 I use gluetun for this (https://github.com/qdm12/gluetun) It’s a separate container with your vpn settings, you can then use this container as the network interface for your qbittorrent container. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Navajubble · 2023-10-06 10:48 They're separate types of VPNs. You use a **VPN service** to tunnel traffic (I use [transmission- openvpn](https://github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn) personally) between your torrent client/daemon and the internet. Then you use Netmaker to access your NAS, as you would normally. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samjongenelen · 2023-10-06 10:48 You could try a docker container that has a kill switch vpn. I use https://github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spanky34 · 2023-10-06 11:37 Gluetun was so easy to setup that I went ahead and put my *arrs behind it too. I also run an exit node for my tailscale on my opnsense router and advertise the subnet so that I can get in from outside easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- furculture · 2023-10-06 12:18 Commenting for later so I can go back to this thread for answers (as I save more posts than I comment, so it would be easier for me to come back this way). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SpongederpSquarefap · 2023-10-06 12:53 Yeah I use this too, so easy to put your entire download stack behind it Only problem I have with it is if there's a connection blip, it kills both qbittorrent and deluge Doesn't seem to affect Transmission though so I switched to that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IT_Warlock_ · 2023-10-06 14:21 I just set up gluetun last night and was very pleasantly surprised with how easy it was ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-10-06 14:37 Never looked into Netmaker, is there a Netmaker vs Tailscale comparison thread yet? I love Tailscale, but am always interested to see what else is out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- panthrosrevenge · 2023-10-06 14:51 On Core you can set up your torrent client to run in it's own jail that connects to your VPN service ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-10-06 14:56 This isn't ideal as scripting the port forwarding will be kinda annoying. (Torrenting works without portforwarding but is slower) Using something like this is better: https://hub.docker.com/r/binhex/arch-qbittorrentvpn/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xupetas · 2023-10-06 16:05 Yep. Take a look at split brain vpn. Set a network route outside of your vpn range for the ip of the nas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtChachee · 2023-10-06 16:46 I still can't get this to work and download torrents. I can check the IP inside the container and it's pulling a "not my country" IP...but torrents won't connect, and nothing downloads. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samjongenelen · 2023-10-06 18:23 Hmm well what do the docker logs say? Maybe your vpn server blocks torrents? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Express_Broccoli_584 · 2023-10-06 19:44 Can you elaborate on what you mean? I use gluetun and didn't need to script anything for port forwarding. I just set the port in the compose file to match my VPN port. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZeltasGotSteez · 2023-10-06 22:43 I'm pretty sure that this isn't the exact same use case as you, and I'm sure it might be less secure than other methods, but it works for me. I use NordVPN, an Ubuntu server on my local network, and NoMachine installed across my devices. I found out that because of the way NordVPN works, I couldn't SSH or use NoMachine to remote view my server while it was connected to NordVPN. So, I used the Proxy settings on my torrenting client (Deluge) to establish a connection through NordVPN while torrents are active. Now, I can still NoMachine onto the server on my local network while torrents are active. I've set up Tailscale on my devices, so I can still remote in outside the local network even though there are torrents running. I wonder if the torrent client on your NAS could be configured using a Proxy connection through your VPN, and then use a remote client like NoMachine or plain old SSH to still connect? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- therealpocket · 2023-10-06 23:44 I use Mullvad and it has an option to allow local access network devices which doesn't interfere with my Tailscale VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sexyshingle · 2023-10-07 07:02 hmm this is an interesting tip. I've never noticed issues with qbittorrent when my VPN or connection dropped... I wonder if this is a setting somewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SpongederpSquarefap · 2023-10-07 07:32 I don't know what it is with mine, but now Mullvad has stopped port forwarding, qbittorrent just shoes the firewall icon and never downloads anything Not sure how I'm meant to get around that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-10-07 12:59 [removed]
