Docker vs. LXC Proxmox reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 05:24 Hi I'm in the process of migrating from raspberrypi to a tiny pc as server with proxmox previously I had docker and loved it especially watchtower and portainer, because it's soo incredibly simple. I did some research and everything points me to LXC on proxmox and especially different ip for each sounds great. But anyhow I miss watchtower and portainer. What should I install? What about docker onl things? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-06 05:41 Why not run a VM with Docker inside for those things you dont want to/cant run in LXC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DryPhilosopher8168 · 2023-10-06 06:37 VM + Docker / podman from personal experience. LXC is amazing but at least for self-hosting docker is much easier to maintain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 07:11 Well then i cannot have a own ip for each container ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 07:13 What is podman? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-06 07:15 First: Why do you think you need that? Reverse Proxy servers are a thing, and in combination it can also provide SSL for your containers (which some require) and saves you from having to add the port number to each service. So using `https://portainer.local.example.com` becomes easy. Second: Yes you can. Look at Docker networking with macvlan. But using a reverse proxy usually makes more sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-06 07:17 A alternative implementation to container management, mostly compatible to Docker and has some great features, but maybe not ideal to get started with that for a beginner. You could also simply google "what is podman". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DryPhilosopher8168 · 2023-10-06 07:19 A rootless alternative for docker. I thought, if you are looking into LXC, it is maybe because of security concerns running docker. For the docker cli, podman is a drop-in replacement. Sadly, not for portainer. Things get nerdy there: https://github.com/portainer/portai ner/issues/2991#issuecomment-1139101638 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- qcdebug · 2023-10-06 07:44 You can also route within those systems without having to use emulated bridges. I routed a full block of public IPs in to the docker host to eliminate the need for nat and you still get one IP per host, just remember to set it static or it will probably roll to another before long. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cryptoguy255 · 2023-10-06 10:19 With docker you can assign lan ip's. Lookup macvlan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 12:11 I have a reverse proxy and use it. But with seperate IP it would be more simple and reliable for general access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-06 12:12 shrug, if you think so okay. Then follow the rest of my comment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 13:08 Oh okay, thanks. Yeah I don't think I want to switch zo something completely different. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-10-06 14:51 This is the best way. I run Debian 12 in a VM with Docker CE, Portainer(with a custom app template list) and love it. It's almost as seamless as Unraid in the easy/1-click deployment category. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-06 17:22 Why not both? Sounds a bit double but I personally have docker running inside of a lightweight LXC container. Makes it easy to backup, migrate and manage resources docker is able to use. Double containerisation but it's more flexible than using a VM while getting the benefits Proxmox offers which you wouldn't get when installing docker directly in Proxmox ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-06 19:36 Yeah I think i'll make all the main ressource using container lxc and the others docker inside lxc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trumee · 2023-10-07 05:43 I run docker inside an LXD container. Docker runs in a privileged mode inside an unprivileged LXD instance. works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dapper-Inspector-675 · 2023-10-07 10:38 Nice thanks
