Automated ebook server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paul-d9 · 2023-10-05 21:25 I am working on setting up an ebook server that will automate the download and sharing of books so no matter where I am I can access my collection. My current setup is, Unraid > Readarr (Docker) I am looking for a solution that will provide a clean, easy to use interface for remotely accessing the collection via web browser. I first looked into Calibre but it looks like having it set-up to automatically import newly downloaded books means it will delete those book from the Readarr folder which I'm not a fan of. This is a shame as I like the interface of Calibre Web and was thinking of using that to browse my book collection. Does it still make sense to use Calibre and just duplicate the books in my Readarr folder to a Calibre folder? ALso, the collection will be used on a Kobo and a Kindle so if possible, I'd like to be able to download in both epub and Amazons ebook format. If not, is there an easy option to strip DRM from an epub so they can easily be viewed on a Kindle? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-10-05 21:45 I use Kavita (https://www.kavitareader.com/) as my main book manager and reader. I'd look into that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paul-d9 · 2023-10-05 22:42 I like that it lets you download or send it to your device, which is handy. It doesn't appear to support many formats though (website says "Books: EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF"). I think the main worry I have is that certain epubs may have DRM and I've heard that Kindles can have issues with some DRM protected epubs. Unless I find a good solution to strip the DRM from all the books. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leftjun · 2023-10-06 00:28 I use Kavita a lot but I don't use Kindle/DRM books myself. Googling a bit with the keywords "calibre remove drm", I see that there are fairly recent dated pages mentioning plugins that can remove DRM through Calibre, maybe you can look into that direction? I do epub to epub conversion in Calibre and re-export the epub whenever Kavita has any problems reading particular files. For Kavita I like it that I can download epubs to read on ebook readers, but after some time I mostly read online through browser on Kavita mobile/web interface. I read on 2-4 devices throughout the day so it's really cool to be able to pickup and resume reading from any device as long as its reachable (LAN/Internet) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paul-d9 · 2023-10-06 01:46 I think I'll give Calibre another shot and test out the Readarr integration to see whether it can register my books in Calibre without deleting them from my Readarr directory. Why so many different devices for reading? That's dedication. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leftjun · 2023-10-06 02:18 I started reading with Japanese Light Novels (a progression from Anime to Manga to Novels). Those days I was reading from Desktop/Laptop screens and then from my phone and then tablet. Now I mostly read Webnovels (JP/CN/KR) and occasionally "normal" books that I take interest it. I bought a Boox Leaf 2 recently, set it up, and tried reading on it, the reading itself was pretty decent (of course, e-ink), I had a few issues, with it not being able to fit in the pocket and e-ink being still too slow to do scrolling on browser. It works well if you do the usual route of loading it with epubs and reading, but I wanted progress syncing and tracking with Kavita (hence I only read from browser at the moment). So I just never ended up using it much. Might give e-ink a try again with the Boox Palma (phone size) though. My four devices refers to my laptop when I'm at work, phone whenever (e.g. outside, toilet, lying down, etc.), tablet, and desktop PC when I'm at home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XxNerdAtHeartxX · 2023-10-06 05:09 If its deleting things from your 'readarr folder', you have it set up wrong. My stack looks like: > Goodreads Lists > Readarr > Calibre > Calibre-Web > Kobo Sync I wrote up a big thing on the Kobo sub about using Kobo Sync via Calibre Web, which you can read through [here](https://www.reddit.com/ r/kobo/comments/zdmsom/from_kindle_oasis_3_to_kobo_libra_2_as_a_calibr e/). But now, I literally just add a book to my 'want to read' list on goodreads, and it shows up on my Kobo later that day - All automated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-10-06 08:35 I had to ditch kavita, because the buildt-in Browser of my kobo (rebranded Version called tolino) cannot render the kavita web interface. Kobo/Tolino devices are quite limited unfortunately, maybe worth testing before you commit to a solution! I switched to ubooquity, which does work on the kobo/tolino. But ubooquity is more basic and hasnt seen an Update in quite some time... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paul-d9 · 2023-10-08 01:13 When I set up the auto importing in Calibre it said it would delete everything in the folder but after the importing and integration everything seems fine. I'll take a look at that once I'm ready to set up automatic downloads to my Kobo, thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vinhdizzo · 2023-10-16 16:50 >My stack looks like: > >Goodreads Lists > Readarr > Calibre > Calibre-Web > Kobo Sync Does Calibre in your refer to \[this\]([https://github.com/linuxserver/docker- calibre](https://github.com/linuxserver/docker-calibre)) docker self- hosted app? Or does it refer to an installed app on your laptop or server? Do you have the workflow written up anywhere? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XxNerdAtHeartxX · 2023-10-16 16:54 Yep, it does refer to that since I wanted it all hosted and able to run on its own. I do not have a writeup or anything anywhere, but I have been considering doing so. I can't promise anything, but its pretty straightforward (except maybe the KoboSync part)
