New to self hosting, recently hosted nextcloud, what else should I host? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 16:56 I am new to self hosting, I recently set up nextcloud on my old PC, it's on Ubuntu server. It works great, set up a domain, now I can access from anywhere in the world. After browsing here for a while, I can see you guys are hosting many MANY other services that I had never heard of. I did hear of Plex/jellyfin, I don't have many offline movies to host, but I'll give it a shot anyway. What else do you guys recommend? I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and try something challenging. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pankompot · 2023-10-05 17:27 I host Plex and NC. Everything i need. And VPN (OpenVPN) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 17:28 I want to try hosting a VPN, was it difficult? Did you use a domain to connect? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- One-Main5244 · 2023-10-05 17:45 Vault-/bitwarden has definitely been my most used selfhosted service ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 17:46 I will look into it, thanks for the recommendation ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-05 17:48 https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=what+should+host&restrict _sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=bored&restrict_sr=on&incl ude_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 17:49 Haha thanks! I'll read those! I forget I can do phrase searches on subreddits ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gh057k33p3r · 2023-10-05 17:52 Home Assistant, Frigate, Bind9, Nginx Proxy Manager, Photoprism, Wireguard, Jellyfin, Vaultwarden, qBittorrent all in docker ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 17:54 Thank you! I'll research what they do! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gh057k33p3r · 2023-10-05 17:57 Frigate and HomeAssistant are for cameras, to get notifications on my phone. Bind9 is a DNS server, Nginx a reverse proxy. WireGuard is the VPN so I can access my services outside home network. Vaultwarden is a backend for password manager, you can use the bitwarden phone app. Jellyfin is the fully self hosted alternative for plex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Educational-Craft545 · 2023-10-05 17:57 [filebrowser](https://github.com/filebrowser/filebrowser) for easy file management ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pankompot · 2023-10-05 18:05 You must have public ip, than i used free ddns.net (i think NO-IP is name of provider). PiVPN is easy to install, but i use portainer for maintaining docker, so in my case its in container 🙂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CossacKing · 2023-10-05 18:08 Yeah, I'm also using NO-IP, I'll check it out ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vogete · 2023-10-05 18:30 Great list! I actually started using PowerDNS instead of Bind9 because then I can separately manage DNS entries through the API using OctoDNS/DNSControl. I just found it annoying running Ansible playbooks to copy bind zone files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldManinTights · 2023-10-05 18:49 It was easy https://github.com/notthebee/ansible-easy-vpn there’s a YouTube video…search for WireGuard 2fa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldManinTights · 2023-10-05 18:51 Also connects to duckdns.org for easy domain access ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KillerTic · 2023-10-05 18:53 Hey, I just wrote a general overview of my homelab. I was struggling with slow speeds and annoying errors in NextCloud for so long. I tried pretty much every single tip and tweak I could find online. I just switched to Traefik for my reverse proxy, and all of the issues immediately went away. It is a bit harder to setup, but I think it will save you a lot of headaches in the long run. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mpw-linux · 2023-10-05 21:59 Host some photos, host some music, host some blogs, host a chess server. You can use Tailscale as free vpn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bluebradcom · 2023-10-05 22:12 I did some research in this, and it's crucial to log all your equipment along with their power usage. A year into my exploration, I crunched the numbers and realized that keeping my old computers running 24/7 was more costly compared to hosting on AWS or Digital Ocean. However, for tinkering and learning purposes, the setup is considerably cheaper. If you're keen on delving into web design, CentOS with CWP is a great starting point, enabling you to experiment with web apps on Apache or Nginx. For home automation, it's advisable to use small, low-powered computers to avoid a spike in your electricity bill. Trust Me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GenerlAce · 2023-10-05 22:20 I’m all about simplicity, I setup a SaltBox ansible solution. https://github.com/saltyorg/Saltbox. It is a simple deployment setup with a bunch of apps setup for easy deployment. Depending on how much you want to tinker, this is more turn key. A setup like this is what got me into self-hosting and its potential. Runs traefik and with authelia for extra security. Highly recommend it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-10-06 00:16 Vaultwarden, emby, linkthing, searxng, adguardhome, all dockerized of course. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-10-06 00:19 Strange. I use NPM, have no speed problems. Tried traefik based on the hype, but so complicated configuring it with all the required parameters for every container. Then again, I find NC a bloated cardhouse as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thornygravy · 2023-10-06 01:49 uptime-kuma is cool, notify you if a service is down and I like homer as a dashboard, enjoy your journey! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AKKen_ · 2023-10-06 02:06 Yea I am sure I was running into a rather rare issue. I found very few references to the specific errors I was getting. I only saw one other comment in a thread somewhere of someone else saying switching to Traefik fixed all their issues. I did the same thing you did. I found Traefik very daunting at first so I went with NPM. But I went back and rewatched the Ibracorp video on it and really paid attention and it clicked. If you don’t mind changing settings in a config file vs. a gui, Traefik is not much harder than NPM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-06 02:11 Whatever you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ethereal_g · 2023-10-06 03:05 Backups of your data and backups of application configs. The problem is they require a ton of variables that are not always obvious or provided by container developers. I forgot the specifics; I will see if I can find my notes from last time I tried it (I tried two separate times, gave up both times). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatOfTheDecade · 2023-10-06 13:52 >I crunched the numbers and realized that keeping my old computers running 24/7 was more costly compared to hosting on AWS or Digital Ocean. I wish more people would think about this. An single old server loaded with 5 rotating drives can easily pull 80W or more idle. I pay 17.35 cents per KWH, so that's about $10 per month for that one server. Again, that's only when idle. Under load, power draw spikes up to 200W measured at the outlet. If I'm running a large job where it's going to be chewing on things for hours, like importing a few hundred thousand photos into Immich, that adds up. Full load for 24 hours is about $.80 / day. That's only one server. Of course everyone's mileage may vary. That's a notoriously inefficient server (FX-8350) with 5 rotating drives, 32 GB, and one SSD. My docker host is an i3-6100u with an NVMe that draws a fraction of that power even under full load. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Schecher_1 · 2023-10-06 16:00 These programs can be hosted in Docker (I recommend it too): MailCow (Mailserver, Is complex but nice 2 have), Portainer (Manager for Docker), Jellyfin (Video Library) , OpenVPN, KASM (Desktop be like in a Website), Kuma (Uptime Logger), Grafana (Dashboard for Server), VaultWarden (Password Manager). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DoubleDrummer · 2023-10-06 19:50 Definitely go through all the idea presented on this post as well as previous similar posts, but also ask yourself, what problems do I need to solve, and look for selfhosted solutions. I "acquire" a lot of media so have a suite of apps to solve and mange that. I have various dietary restrictions on my family so a recipe/meal planner is a life saver. Extra bit and automation for processes and home automation, solved. Inventory my wife's junk, done.
