Has anyone tried to run the Proton Mail UI locally? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GenerlAce · 2023-10-05 22:32 Question for someone not familiar with this. What is the benefit of/ point of it. Is it to route their services through a self-hosted solution ? I’m assuming it still has to route through their servers before reaching the self hosted. Sorry for the ignorance. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-10-06 08:34 Protonmail is not made to be selfhosted, there database etc isn't exposed and afaik there backend itself isn't open sourced(With the argument that you can never know WHAT is running on the servers so open sourcing it doesn't really improve trust, you could argue against this if you tried). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-06 11:11 Can't speak for OP but it's not uncommon in the selfhosted crowd to download their emails locally. It gives you an email archive which can go back many years and multiple across accounts, and it also keeps the storage requirements of your current email accounts lower, so you pay less for them. The problem with downloading your emails locally in a desktop client is that if you want to look for something from a few years ago you have to do it on that PC/laptop. If the emails are in a sane format like MH or maildir, with one file per message, you *could* SSH to where the archive is and grep through the files, but if you need to get some attachments out of a message you still need a proper email client. The solution for this is to have a self-hosted IMAP client, feed it your email archive, and install a webmail that you can access from anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GenerlAce · 2023-10-06 11:16 Thank you for the breakdown of information. Definitely helps me understand it a bit more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-10-09 12:09 1. [many years ago some folks created an API compatible server that could be used with ProtonMail UI](https://github.com/emersion/neutron). But it was abandoned. 2. Stalwart is indeed the best mail server software that I ever saw. It contains all the nice things that people should have. Maybe someone will add an ProtonMail compatible API layer for it one day. PS: Also there's r/stalwartlabs/
