Self hosting email server on Raspberry Pi 4 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-05 13:53 Hello, I have tried self hosting email server on Raspberry PI .. so far not successful as I was using a free domain name .. which probably would not work anyway .. So the next step is to buy a domain somewhere .. The question is .. Will I be able to add multiple emails under that domain eg myname, info, sales, R&D [inquiry@example.com](mailto:inquiry@example.com) etc in the software on the self hosted server .. Will there be settings for this? ... In the Citadel software I only see a space to add just one email no alternative emails or subdomain emails .. Anyone like to comment on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Janpeterbalkellende · 2023-10-05 14:04 id recomend not doing email hosting your self its a giant PITA tbh. and not worth the effort to host your self imo. But ignoring my advice, most email server software lets you make unlimited email adresses from the domain name ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JapioJas · 2023-10-05 15:44 Yes, building a mailserver from scratch is a difficult task, but there are plenty of options that make it easy. I use a mail server suite called MailCow, after some OOM errors and SWAP memory tuning I was able to build a fully functional, low maintenance mailserver for 5 domains. So yeah I would recommend it, but only if you use something like MailCow. ([https://mailcow.email](https://mailcow.email)) P.S. Don't forget to create a reliable Backup System! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AskForMyBitcoinAdres · 2023-10-05 16:14 If the only thing you are going to do on it is run the mail server id recommend "mailinabox" https://mailinabox.email/ I use this, as well as the built in DNS. and yes you can make as many mailboxes as you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-05 17:05 Thanks for that .. I'm on the mailinabox site now .. will try and install on a Raspberry Pi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-05 17:52 Thanks .. looks good .. mailinabox option mentioned below looks it could be costly USD 6 a month for a droplet/virtual server at Digital Ocean .. the point of this exercise to to have a main server for free or as low cost as possible ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-05 18:43 If you really don’t care about your email at friggin all, host it on an SD card in a raspi on a dial up connection. Yay. 😱 Not only will you lose everything soon - in this case your server stored mails - because the sd card will just die, no, your mails will also be in everybody‘s spam folder, because they come from a dialup range (as do spam mails from hacked end user computers). 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dustbull · 2023-10-05 20:54 If you want to self-host, try poste.io, the solution should cover everything you need ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-06 04:26 What a silly answer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- muoshuu · 2023-10-06 05:58 Silly and not-well-put, yes, but valid all the same. Hosting email is unnecessarily intensive in read/write, memory usage, and compute. SD cards WILL die sooner, but that can be mitigated by using a M.2 SSD adapter. However, your emails likely will end up in everyone's spam folder because you aren't a well-known sender. It's like self-signing your certs vs using a certificate authority. CAs are trusted. It's easier and more effective to just use a trusted provider. Zoho Mail is free if you're willing to use their client, or $1/mo otherwise. Google, Proton Mail, MXRoute, etc. are all in the range of USD$1-12/mo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-06 06:29 Thanks .. yes you are probably correct - I'm already using a SATA to USB and booting from that and not using the SD card at all. I May revert to one of your suggestions eventually .. but I guess I need to follow through first to get this self-hosting thing out of my system. Hosting a web site seems OK though on Raspberry Pi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-06 13:42 Might have been written friendlier, the points are still valid (therefore not silly): SD cards will die way too soon (that SATA/USB are used was not in the original post) and dialup ip ranges will be seen as spam territory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-06 13:52 OK .. thanks .. I might try anyway for my own education ... but probably long term try a third party ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-06 14:16 You could counter both problems by not hosting it locally, but with a virtual or root server provider. Those servers normally run on raids and have a fixed ip which is not considered to be from a dialup range. With some virtual server providers, you can also do snapshots and roll back if you have done something wrong. You however would still need to learn how to configure your Linux system, DNS, rDNS, mail server and much more correctly for any chance of being able to use the server normally and for the mails from it not being classified as spam. I have hosted a mail server for about 15 years. It is possible, but not "just another self hosted app". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roman5588 · 2023-10-06 20:21 Does your ISP let you set a ptr record? If not you are setting yourself up to fail unless you have an outgoing mail solution (ie smtp2go, mail baby, Amazon ses) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adscombecorner · 2023-10-07 11:24 Not sure about that .. But I more or less put this on hold for the time being as it's taking up too much time ... I'm currently forwarding to Gmail and routing email SMTP though Brevo (free version) and send as from Gmail - I'm even sending as mydomain from Thunderbird, but you have to manually add the domain email everything in the connected Gmail account .. Anyone got any better solutions? So at least all of this is free .. although I don't really like using my gmail to send as my domain email
