Taking a big leap reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 03:27 For the last few months I've been hosting a minecraft server and pihole on a small Dell unit i bought for $50 on Facebook Marketplace and i also host an Ark server on my laptop. I'm finally consolidating onto one beefy machine. Was looking for parts to make a frankenstein at Micro Center and wound up grabbing an i9 12900k and 32GB of GSkill DDR5 RAM on an MSI mobo for $400. Ridiculous deal! Anyway I clearly have quite a lot of power to work with and want to justify it as best I can. Any suggestions on how to harden it from cyber attacks since I do open ports for the game servers? Also I'm relatively new to self hosting so any suggestions on what services i should begin hosting would be equally appreciated. Thanks all in advance! Pic of said server. DeathCube or PWNBox are potential names, if you guys have any better ones I'd love to hear it 😆 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 03:52 Forgot to mention I'm running Ubuntu Server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-05 04:30 My first thought would be if you have a better place to set it up or are you just trying to configure it for remote access from a different device on the counter and moving it to a spot that may not be easy to access. My wife would kill me if I had my server on the kitchen counter lol XD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 04:46 Lmao i have a safe spot for it by my desk, i was in the middle of putting it together on my kitchen counter. Its the only space i can work in my apartment lol. I plan on operating it remotely ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-05 05:46 That’s fair, apartments are like that, I just had to get a good laugh in 😄! I know that I got so fed up with windows server that I setup proxmox tonight, I think it’s 1000x better than vmware or hyper-v server.(Hypervisors) I’ve got some storage drives that I plan to use for Nextcloud. I do plan to keep windows server but I won’t be using it for hosting apps, just using it for Active Directory and DNS. It’s a good learning tool for work since we are not in the cloud yet and are windows based devices on the employee side. Not sure what else what I to do yet, tbd! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-10-05 06:08 Why is will you run ? Why do you need something that big ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hamses44 · 2023-10-05 08:05 Look into Docker and eventually Pterodactyl for game server hosting :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-10-05 08:10 The easiest way to start with security is to isolate each service in their own VM. Proxmox will help you there. For services to put there, it’s really up to you. There was a survey the other day. You might want to check that out for inspiration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmanuelSchanderl · 2023-10-05 11:03 just to throw in a bit of ideas. unRAID, NixOs, proxmox, Ubuntu or maybe even fedoraServer where you could combine your server into AllInOne solution together with a firewall e.g. op sense maybe you even want to connect a switch directly to it and make it your "baseStation" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmanuelSchanderl · 2023-10-05 11:04 where having opnsense as more or less industrial grade firewall will definitely give you a security boost. maybe even think of a freeIPA LDAP VM to manage privilege and users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isThisRight-- · 2023-10-05 11:06 My first thought is, how do you like the monitor? I need something like that when we go to our family vacation spot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 11:42 Yeah man it's great. I use it as a portable monitor for my steam deck! https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VA1655-Portable-Ergonomics-Protective /dp/B09237LL5Q/ref=sr_1_9?crid=385NEZ5QZDLHK&keywords=viewsonic+portab le+monitor&qid=1696506055&sprefix=viewsonic+portable+monitor%27%2Caps% 2C131&sr=8-9 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 11:43 I'm excited to get started with Docker for sure! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kokek1 · 2023-10-05 12:59 mmmmmmmmmmm that HAF XB case.... had it its so awesome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OfficialRoyDonk · 2023-10-05 13:15 Do you know where you are right now? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-10-05 13:17 Yes and I want to know why they need something that big, is this for more storage or more power or something else ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justjokiing · 2023-10-05 13:43 I have the same case for my server, I love it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lplanum · 2023-10-05 14:35 As Steve Ballmer once famously said: "Virtualize! Virtualize! Virtualize!". Or something along those lines. My point is, Virtualize!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lplanum · 2023-10-05 14:48 You can run a server on a Raspberry PI. You can run a server on a NUC. You can run a server on a laptop. You can run a server on a desktop. You can run a server on a DL380. You can run a cluster of super computers. So your question is both ignorant and arrogant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 15:05 Yeah dude. Its clean AF. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 15:06 The case is aesthetically pleasing and fits my needs lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMightyGordo · 2023-10-05 15:06 I am enamored for sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marwood0 · 2023-10-05 17:17 Just a warning, my kid yanked out one of the hard drives connected to that little daughter board thing for the hot swap bays while it was on, and it appears my southbridge chip or something supplying it got fried. This was on a asus sabertooth. That was a sad night. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marwood0 · 2023-10-05 17:20 I almost exclusively worked with Windows. Is there a guide / video / class you (or anyone here) could recommend to get started with Proxmox? I have the box built already just don't know how to start. Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-05 17:23 So far honestly, I have just been doing it the hard way and using their documentation on Proxmox website. I also look in their forum posts for similar things I am running into or post if needed. So far I haven’t needed to post yet. I’m sure when I get into Nextcloud and trying to set it up may end up posting if I run into issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Toastytodd4113113 · 2023-10-05 17:41 I prefered amp over it. Both are nice. Amp just has a wider box and better ui imo. And cost 10 bucks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rooneybuk · 2023-10-05 18:04 What model case is it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ominousFlyingBagel · 2023-10-05 20:27 I think [this Video ](https://youtu.be/sZcOlW-DwrU) might help you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oureux · 2023-10-05 20:39 I use the same case for my server. It was a breeze to build in. I’ll eventually need to solve the lack of hdd mounting locations. I currently have 4x 4tb drives either two cold spares. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aside6 · 2023-10-05 22:12 I love this case, I’ve had mine for 9 years and it is the only case I’ll ever want to use going forward (I have also talked several others into buying one and they love it) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrOfAwesomeness · 2023-10-05 22:35 It looks like it's a Cooler Master HAF XB EVO https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-HAF-EVO- Motherboard/dp/B00FFJ0H3Q/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lorax-06 · 2023-10-05 23:27 I would put a raspberry pi 3 in front of it with nginx running to reverse proxy everything to the server... for starters.
