Heimdall or another dashboard that can be hosted on shared hosting? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AffairesDePiasses · 2023-10-04 22:04 Hey everyone, I'm currently using Heimdall hosted on my home server as a dashboard, which I share with my family members. The problem arises when my home internet connection goes down, rendering the dashboard inaccessible. I'm not keen on managing a VPS or any other server. However, one of my family members has their own shared hosting for their blog and has offered to host it for me. The catch: It's not possible to install Docker there; we can only upload files via FTP. Is there a way to run Heimdall in such an environment? Or, if not, are there any easy-to-deploy alternatives? The main goal is just to have Google search and links to a few services. Updates would be infrequent. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- armunro · 2023-10-04 22:29 I was just trying to get Dashy going the other day for family use and having similar thoughts. The simplest risk-free option is a static HTML link dashboard. Taking it a little bit further, a lightweight JS client app that fetches links from a data file (json or yaml) provides flexibility while being fundamentally simple. Long story short, I started building it. In theory the client could be hosted from any web server, even github pages or run locally. The configs can exist in a private location, separate from the client. Alternatively, they can be bundled with the client as well. It won't be flashy, but it should be lightweight and still fairly customizable. To illustrate what a config file will look like: { "config": { "title": "My Bookmarks", "theme": "dark" }, "groups": [ { "name": "Code", "bookmarks": [ { "name": "GitHub", "url": "https://github.com", "icon": "fab-github" } ], "groups": [] } ] } ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 23:03 Unless something's recently changed, an always-available dashboard seems like the perfect use case for Oracle's free tier cloud hosting. You don't get a ton in terms of resources, but you don't need much for a dashboard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AffairesDePiasses · 2023-10-05 07:09 I'll admit that if at all possible, I'd like to avoid having to manage a new server. I'll keep that as a last resort idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AffairesDePiasses · 2023-10-05 07:14 It seems like a great idea! Do you plan on making it available at any point ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- armunro · 2023-10-05 14:02 I'll make it available today and post an update on this thread. It's all working with minimal features. I'll be adding some minimal customization and theming support as well as vector icon support in the coming days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-05 22:44 Heimdall would probably do great on there, just not the docker image. It is made in Laravel which is a very popular framework in PHP. Most shared hosts only do PHP and have at least some support to easily host Laravel apps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- armunro · 2023-10-05 22:49 Here you go - [https://github.com/armunro/quickmark](https://github.co m/armunro/quickmark). It needs a lot of work, but the rest shouldn't take long. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AffairesDePiasses · 2023-10-06 14:02 I get a 404 error when I click on you link, is it public yet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- armunro · 2023-10-06 14:11 Haha yep that was it. Should be fixed now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AffairesDePiasses · 2023-10-06 14:51 Great, it's working, I'm going to check that over the week-end, thank you very much!
