Operating system advice for self-hosting on server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-04 21:26 Hello, I have a consumer version of a PC case with a backplane that supports 6 NAS drives (no hardware raid controller). Currently, I have 4 6TB drives and was using the intel software raid with Windows Server but I am trying to get away from Windows Server as it is always a headache to use it as a webserver or hosting apps from my experience. I always tend to run into problems with network settings with NIC teaming and the network configuration just changing on its own having to reset it. As well, I know a lot have mentioned that built-in software raid is not good when researching online. What are some good OS options for setting up my 4 NAS drives in RAID 5? I have used Ubuntu before so I do understand it somewhat but I would not call myself a guru with the terminal and all that but have followed guides before. I want to start by self hosting a good storage cloud like nextcloud, owncloud, or filecloud but I have not chosen an application yet. Nextcloud seems to be pretty popular. Once I perfect that application I will look into other things that might be useful to self host. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-04 21:49 Proxmox with ZFS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-04 21:50 Debian Bookworm, Ubuntu LTS. Or consider running Proxmox on the baremetal and run your services in VMS and LXCs. Or consider running TrueNAS or unRAID if you want more NAS-like features out of the box. There is no "best OS". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MenisBornBad · 2023-10-04 22:26 I have a similar set-up, I am using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, using a lot of docker containers and some VM in KVM (libvirt). 6 disk: 2 x 6 TB in RAID 1 (software RAID) 2 x 12 TB in RAID 1 (software RAID) 2 x 2 TB as a single disk for media. I started with this Iike 3 years ago on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I am really happy with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-04 23:10 I was considering this too. Know any good guide(s) to get me rolling? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-04 23:28 That’s a great way to look at it. I know proxmox is pretty popular because I read it supports both linux and windows operating systems. I will still use my windows server OS for AD and just learning more features we use at work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-04 23:29 Know any good starter guides for promox and ZFS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- armorer1984 · 2023-10-05 04:01 Proxmox, plain and simple. Run anything you want in an LXC or VM under that. If you set up a Samba container you now have a Nas that is about as bulletproof as it gets. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuySensei88 · 2023-10-05 04:22 Yes, I have already installed it on my server. It's definitely a learning curve for me but I am thankful they have a GUI for newbies like me. I definitely am bookmarking a lot of the documentation on their website to have on hand. I will have to learn how samba containers work and how to get it to work with nextcloud. I am not even sure what the prerequisites for my physical drives are for me to set that up. Can I setup RAIDZ (RAID5) with ZFS and then use it with samba container and then set it up with nextcloud? Sorry, I am fairly a noob when it comes to a lot of this and I will probably be posting a lot on the reddit to get this working properly unless someone has a good guide I can follow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-05 05:44 There are plenty here on Reddit.
