Thunderbird replacement reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeoJackOfBlades · 2023-10-04 21:15 Currently I archive my emails on my computer in thunderbird. I have about 10 years of emails, some addresses don't even exist anymore. Every end of the month I download the emails from that month that didn't go to the trash and send them to my thunderbird, thus deleting them from the original remote location. The problem is that this way I only have access to these emails at home by accessing my computer. What I'm looking for is a way to access them through web mail and I know that there are countless solutions for this. But I don't intend to put my email credentials in the client, I just want to be able to store the emails on my server, install the web client, and thus be able to access it via my cell phone or outside the network, as if it were an email box but without it is actually an smtp/imap server. Note that it is just a solution for archiving purposes. Is there something similar? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-10-04 21:30 Why not just use IMAP server? You may not actually send any mail via it (and thus free yourself from most of the troubles with self-hosting email), but just use IMAP protocol to access it. There are plenty of WebUI options for IMAP servers, and you may also just use your email client software on your desktop and mobile as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-04 21:52 I have my same mailbox since 2003 running on Microsoft Exchange. I know its overkill for most people selfhosting, but it is truly the best of the best when it comes to email, calendar and contacts. It just works, forever, most clients don’t need an app (like iOS). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AntiAoA · 2023-10-05 05:00 Exchange 2003? Please tell me you aren't doing this. 2003 is so insecure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-05 05:04 Since 2003 not on 2003. My Exchange Cluster is probably more secure than anything you can imagine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- withere · 2023-10-05 10:38 Last time when i had such a mail migration i created an IMAP account on my Synology, connected Thunderbird to this account and moved the hole (old) mailbox to the new local account. This may take a while but it was a simple solution for me ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mss-cyclist · 2023-10-05 11:49 You could run an imap server (e.g. dovecot) locally and sync your old remote email automatically with fetchmail or getmail to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeoJackOfBlades · 2023-10-05 12:26 but with imap it's not necessarily possible to store emails locally, right? If I lose access to my original account, the next time I access the account via web mail imap, I won't even be able to log in. I tested a few tools and couldn't find an option to move to a local folder like Thuderbird. When searching I saw a lot of suggestions talking about roundcube but in the interface I didn't see anything like "archive locally", it seems to me that every time it is always making an imap request. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeoJackOfBlades · 2023-10-05 12:28 Hmm, I also have synology and forgot to test their mail server. Thanks for remember! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeoJackOfBlades · 2023-10-05 12:35 Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-10-05 13:13 Maybe I misunderstand something, but let's clarify how I see it: 1. You have mail on your external account, like gmail.com. You may store a local offline cached copy of them in any mail client, or you may not, however you chose another way - archiving to a separate location. OK. 2. You set up your one IMAP (just IMAP, to SMTP) server - archive.neojackofblades.com. You copy your mails there and there they are stored as long as you run this server. Even if you delete your gmail account, nothing happens with your mails here. You may install some WebUI like Roundcube or Squirrelmail on the server, which will, of course, work only as long as the server itself is working. But you may as well access this server from Thunderbird or Outlook or whatever and choose to download all may locally. This local copy will be accessible in your mail client even if your archive.neojackofblades.com is down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZAFJB · 2023-10-05 15:51 #Use IMAP
