Low power server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njt1000 · 2023-10-04 20:07 I have done quite a bit of searching but can’t find a good answer that suits. I’m about to get fibre to the house - 900Mbps up and down, so I’m looking at self hosting some utilities and having a bit of a home lab setup too. Currently have a synology nas and use tailscale for remote access to files. Infuse for media both inside and outside the house. I have hoobs running on a pi and Pihole on another pi. Network is UniFi - USG + 24 port PoE switch. All is in a rack, but it’s not full depth, something like 430mm. There is a few U spare, but more like 6 or 7 not 12etc. Happy with secondhand, happy with rack mount or put on a shelf. Initial setup would be Linux OS, or potentially proxmox or unRAID. I’d first just be getting pihole, hoobs/alternative, and d couple of bits and pieces, but then start to build to include pfsense so I can replace the UniFi USG, and the replace the Synology NAS when need be. Also consider nginx as reverse proxy compared to tailscale. Potentially host photos etc and have something like minim server for music. Interested in the most suitable hardware to get me started and be powerful enough to be able to grow. I’m in the UK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FelisCantabrigiensis · 2023-10-04 21:02 Raspberry Pis, especially the upcoming rPi 5 (you can't get one until next year unless you have it on order, though) can handle quite a lot of work if connected to decent storage - USB-connected SSD. You could also consider an Intel NUC or equivalent. They're low power and quite capable if given plenty of memory and, again, a decent disc. For rackmount, smaller Supermicro rack servers turn up on eBay and they might do you too. The sort of unit that has two disc bays and a low power CPU and one PSU is what I'm thinking of. Bear in mind that lower-end SSD like the Crucial MX500 can be had for less than £100 for 2TB, so you can get pretty reasonable amounts of storage for reasonable money these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whohaseyestosee · 2023-10-05 06:46 It's worth mentioning Zen2/Zen3 AMD CPUs can now be run in Linux with kernel parameter: amd_pstate=active This allows for the CPU to run in an extreme low-power state and scale up if needed.
