Self hosting when overseas + travelling; host at home at friend's or mini PC to take with me? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Flux_nzl · 2023-10-04 19:55 Hey, I am planning on travelling overseas for a couple years "at some point" and want to decide between a few options for self hosting of some services. I've slowly come to rely on multiple of the services I now host so I'm keen to keep it up if I can. Service stack below, the main ones worth mentioning, anyway. * Proxmox > Ubuntu server VM > Docker > \~21 containers * \*arr stack * Nextcloud * Nginx Proxy Manager * Ghost * Proxmox Backup Server * Plex **Option 1 - Host at my friend's place with an x86 mini PC like i7-8700t.** * Tailscale to remotely manage **Pros** * Easy * x86 * Full uptime * No Cloudflare DNS constant changing **Cons** * Latency? (I'd be literally half way across the world - This is a big one I'm unsure on) * No physical access (can message friend to do basic tasks, he's more proficient than me with hardware should any catastrophic errors occur). * He will be self hosting a domain too; hard to setup 1x external IP with 2x domains? **Option 2 - Take a small ARM SBC with me like RPi5 / Orange Pi 5 Plus with 2tb NVME boot drive** **Pros** * Local * Low power **Cons** * ARM may be slightly limiting * Backups more complex without Proxmox? (maybe there's an ARM Proxmox I can look into but I wouldn't trust the support as much) * When I'm traveling it'll have chunks of downtime * Sorting out IPs for Cloudflare DNS What would you do? Any glaring issues with either approach I haven't outlined? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-04 20:00 > Option 2 - Take a small ARM SBC with me like RPi5 / Orange Pi 5 Plus with 2tb NVME boot drive > ARM may be slightly limiting > maybe there's an ARM Proxmox I can look into but I wouldn't trust the support as much) For the prices of a Rpi5 or Orange you could also just get a NUC from either Intel itself or another brand. Quadcore Celeron easily in the same price range, possibly even cheaper. You could even find a i3 model. With that you have x86 as platform instead of ARM, a whole lot more performance, more features (m2 SSD, more RAM, etc) while only slightly increasing physical size and energy consumption. And of course Proxmox would run on it too. Btw this sub here is about selfhosting **software services**, not about any hardware upgrade or purchase advice. Subs like /r/Homelab /r/HomeServer /r/BuildaPC etc exist. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Flux_nzl · 2023-10-04 20:20 Thanks for the response and I hear you loud and clear on the r/homelab thing, I always thinking about self hosting a lot more holistically than software only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sneakpeekbot · 2023-10-04 20:21 Here's a sneak peek of /r/homelab using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/homelab/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year! \#1: [It finally happened to me! What I mean is - you rock up at a hotel, plug in your server. Sure, if you set it to serve locally you can connect easily in your room. But what about when you're out and about the next day. Are you going to be able to access behind the hotel firewall? Does that use case concern you? If you just want to access locally I think a small mini PC is perfect. I also would not get pi, if you're use to x86, just get a really small mini x86, they're easy to find. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AntiAoA · 2023-10-05 04:55 Fwiw, latency across the world won't matter so long as your friends place has adequate enough upload speeds to support your use. I have a relative in Bahrain who watches my emby media, I'm on the west coast of the US. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheDutchIdiot · 2023-10-05 17:24 I've travelled for years on end and always had my homeserver run mmost things you want. Multiple options to reach it too: - Reverse Proxy (Traefik) or CF Tunnel - Wireguard VPN - OpenVPN to home router - Tailscale If I were you I'd just rent a dedicated server somewhere and put all your crap there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-06 17:35 ## Post Removed Hey, Flux_nzl!
