Hosting Server On Computer reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rebyuuuuu · 2023-10-04 19:06 Just wondering what specs I would need to hold anywhere for about a 1000 Players on a private server that utilizes unreal engine 4, money isn't an issue just doing this for a community of a certain game. I know Ram is the biggest bitch when it comes to this. Does anyone know how much ram I would need per person on that engine? Internet Wise I have about 5 GIG's of upload stable been trying to figure out how much I would need Ram/Hardware Wise I know there's a lot of guides for minecraft/etc but those are much less demanding games unless you utilize a bunch of mods so just wondering if anyone would know for engines like unreal engine 4/5, modern unity, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Szwendacz · 2023-10-04 19:08 Isn't unreal engine a graphics engine, rather than a server software? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rebyuuuuu · 2023-10-04 19:11 Well I'll be the server with my computer, unreal 4/5 typically have more information to process than something like roblox (unless im wrong?) but in general do you know how much you'd need for one player to play on your game/server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nutlift · 2023-10-04 19:40 What they were saying is that unreal isnt what youd be putting on your server, youd be adding the game server software. To use your example of minecraft you wouldnt run the graphics engine you would run the minecraft server jar file. As for how much per player, that heavily depends on what games, their optimization, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoredache · 2023-10-04 20:06 I doubt there is any reliable way for anyone to guess unless something exactly the same as what you plan on running. Knowing only the game engine almost certainly isn't enough details. Many cases the only way you can can do here, is just testing what you will be running. Or just overbuy, and hope you will get a system fast enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ivanow · 2023-10-04 20:21 No. It’s entire game engine, handling everything from graphics, through physics, to networking. https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.0/en-US/networking-and-multiplayer-in- unreal-engine/ As for op’s question, it varies widely between game in question. Generally you want to have as much ram as possible, but when it comes to cpu, there’s huge variance between, say high poly shooter with large tick rate, and some mobile game that uses 10 requests per minute, per client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-10-04 21:00 Tell me the game and I will tell you what you need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-10-05 08:35 So the thing is you can't know, each game has a diffrent requirment for server networking. Some are basically fully Player to Player like GTA Online so it requires very little server side performance. However some others do ALOT of server side processing on requests etc so require more beefy computers(like Minecraft, as it needs to generate new chunks if they haven't been generated/pregenerated). So your gonna have to say which game before anybody here can give meaningful advice.
