Suggestion to self host Spring Boot Backend and Postgres DB reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JngoJx · 2023-10-04 18:16 Hi everyone, I develop my hobby apps with spring boot backend and a Postgres DB. I want to containerize both and host them. What would you suggest? I don't want to go the kubernetes route. I want to rent a VPS, but is it much to setup? Do I need a firewall? How do I make sure that it is secure? In my dream world I rent the VPS, pull the docker images and start the containers. Best Regards ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-04 20:06 Any half decent hosting provider has a firewall enabled by default on a rented VPS. So yes, you just rent it, install Docker, pull your images and only open those ports you explicitly need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brutus5000 · 2023-10-05 19:09 My default setup: Rent a vps and install a minimal NixOS (eg Hetzner with nixinfect script) that only provides docker and restic. Use docker compose with host mounted volumes for your reach container Setup NixOS / systemd jobs to backup your volume with restic to some cloud storage You probably want to use a reverse proxy to handle let's encrypt https certificates. I suggest using traefik. Can be used in the same or different docker compose file.
