The Ever-Expanding Home Server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 15:28 Hey fellow selfhosters, I've shared my setup quite a few times from other sources but I've finally have a one-stop shop for the over 70+ containers I run! Complete with: * Fully Automated Media Server *(Once I have the physical disc of course)* * Google Drive Replacement * GitHub Replacement (w/ Actions & Renovate for package upgrades) * Password Manager * Documentation * RSS Reader * About a Dozen Game Servers * Email *(Ouch)* * And about a dozen other utilities [See all the containers I run, Specs, Backup Strategy (or lack there of), and more here.](https://chse.dev/hs) Drop a comment if you see something missing, I'd love to look into new things :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- candle_in_a_circle · 2023-10-04 15:59 Interested why you don't run Plex in docker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-04 16:03 okay. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 16:06 I have an Nvidia GPU and trying to get transcoding to work inside of Docker was very frustrating. I'm sure I was just doing something wrong but I might revisit it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elsphinc · 2023-10-04 16:27 Deep. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kev-wqa · 2023-10-04 17:34 host machine --> containers ^^ is this how it is setup? Everything on the host directly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 17:48 Everything is inside Docker Containers on the host, yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gazbill · 2023-10-04 17:54 Nice stack :) You might want to look into AdguardHome (DNS) and Home Assistant (home automation), two very useful and interesting apps that both run containerised versions, and arguably I couldn't live without. I use AdguardHome for DNS, so for example I have \*.lan pointing to my home server, and to block unwanted ads and malware network wide. Home Assistant is great for centralising control of any smart things, such as lights and switches etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 18:25 I would definitely look into Home Assistant when I decide to get smart lights/etc. It's super cool, I just need the hardware. I might also look into Adguard Home although I only really use my computer for browsing which has uBlock Origin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NightH4nter · 2023-10-04 18:28 i'm surprised how much stuff is running on so little hardware. good job! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 18:43 So am I honestly. I always thought you'd need one of those massive racks but I have absolutely 0 issues and I've been doing this for a few years, which is awesome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justinhunt1223 · 2023-10-04 19:02 Home assistant is useful for a lot. I have it installed at work with a bunch of services reporting statuses over mqtt. I get alerts when things go down via the home assistant app. I have it logging ram usages, ups wattage, etc. Get it setup now with a database backend so you can expand on it later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shane75776 · 2023-10-04 19:21 Of those 70 containers, how many of them do you *actually* use? Seems like a lot of people here host as much stuff as possible simply because they can and don't actually use it. I'm just curious because I have about 20 containers running for things but it's all stuff that I either use or a dependency of a service I host and use. I'll bring up stuff and mess around with interesting projects but I remove and delete them as soon as I realize I'm not actually going to actively use it. You mention you have a number of game servers running. Are you actually using this game servers or are they just sitting for weeks on end not being used. Wouldn't it be better to shut them down and dedicate those resources elsewhere? Anyways I'm just curious about the mindset really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 19:40 I do actually use (at a guess) 80% of the services daily, and others are strictly informational (speedtest tracker for example [just gets shoved onto my dashboard](https://i.chse.dev/n8fgPelM.png) so I never "open" speedtest tracker) The game servers *do* sit unused a good majority of the time, but it's "easier" to leave everything running in case my friend group wants to play without me there (Yes, I could use something like OliveTin to allow them to start servers easily but meh). --- Although, yes, I do fall into the trap of "oo new service, time to run it" and then never end up using it (looking at you, EmulatorJS) and if I realize I *actually* don't use a service, I'll pull it down. Thanks for the feedback :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shane75776 · 2023-10-04 19:42 Sweet, thanks for the reply. It's nice seeing other people's perspectives on how they use and manage their self hosted services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-04 19:50 Of Course! I'm also just a giant nerd so I'll spin up things I won't use "just in case" a use case comes up (Stirling PDF for example, I'll use literally once every few weeks but it is nice having it there) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnimpeachableTaint · 2023-10-04 20:01 I have a GTX 1060 Super on my Proxmox server that I passthrough to my Ubuntu VM (Docker host). I got the device from a school surplus a couple years ago and haven't even considered upgrading yet. (CPU is too "old" for doing anything like game servers on, so I don't need the ram for that anyways) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ben-ba · 2023-10-05 01:15 Some certs are outdated ;p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 01:56 LOL you just caught me in the migration to Nginx Proxy Manager from Apache2. I forgot YouTube had ads. It even skips sponsored ads baked into the video itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -SetsunaFSeiei- · 2023-10-05 06:46 Interesting option. What I’m really looking for is an option to block ads on chromecast. The wife exclusively uses the iOS app to throw videos up there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Manuborg · 2023-10-05 07:26 I don't think there's a way to do that on a Google device, when these are used the requests are made from that device and not your phone, a DNS sinkhole can't block these ads ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PrestigiousTrain9350 · 2023-10-05 07:38 I've seen the blog before, it used to be an Apache server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gazbill · 2023-10-05 07:39 I came from Traefik which was very config heavy, to NPM, and will never look back, so easy to configure via the web interface and trivial to deploy LE SSL certificates. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nico_is_not_a_god · 2023-10-05 08:53 You could try hosting [castblock](https://github.com/erdnaxeli/castblock). My household is on Android TVs that just have SmartTube, but when it comes to the cast protocol this looks promising! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kekZiger · 2023-10-05 09:01 Do you know the power consumption of your Main server? I look for something to replace my Mini PC with external storage. Needs to be on a budget and little Power consumption. And internal storage would be very nice :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ITuser999 · 2023-10-05 09:43 Nice Setup. I also hosted some game servers for a while on one of my PCs but the power cost was too much for me to reasonable keep it going. I used the software AMP from cube coders. Cheap livetime licencing and it was super simple to set up new servers and ad backups. Maybe worth a look ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 12:16 [I had my own shell script for automating Apache Configs](https://git. chse.dev/chase/scripts/src/commit/a1e7c4e56ce1059dc370cc793de7428cf614 a1b9/WWW/WWW.sh), and I don't see anything wrong with moving to a solution that's "easier" for when I don't want to have to think about how everything is configured and can easily manage sites. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-05 12:16 I'm glad I'm not alone - I cross my fingers every time I spin up a new container on one of my web servers that could use some TLC. The only service I've run into hardware constraints with is Mastodon, but I think that may be more of a critique on how many resources it requires vs the amount of free resources on my server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 12:16 Yep, I just switched today as Apache was getting a bit messy for my liking. (I have over 50 reverse proxy hosts and managing that was becoming a bit of a headache) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 12:18 I do not know the power consumption but it *is* from 2012 so I assume the power is less efficient than a modern option but it works well enough for me that I don't notice it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 12:20 Yeah, Mastodon is quite heavy but I haven't run into many other projects that give that old hardware a run for it's money. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-16_account · 2023-10-05 12:24 My brother in Christ, if someone is running a server at home and hosting services, they're giant nerds compared to the average Joe. The best place to start is https://trash-guides.info/ The initial setup can be a bit of a learning curve but once it’s setup it works out fine. Happy to help with questions but more intelligent people of Reddit have already shared guides/questions if you want to search. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-05 19:31 Coming from someone who has had services running that only seemed to do LDAP (looking at you jellyfin & Mealie) And has tried to set up an LDAP server only to give up. You should indeed give Authentik a try it's awesome! Not saying it's not complicated because IT IS. But there's many tutorials and videos to help set stuff up. I basically have every service integrated with LDAP, OpenID, SAML, or simply a proxy auth page. Sadly, not Home Assistant though... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fenty17 · 2023-10-05 19:39 Impressive list! I am also slightly obsessed with self hosting having bought a similar Optiplex off eBay for £40 with a view to migrating home assistant from my Pi. Now have 32 containers and haven’t even moved HA over yet 🤣 Couple of thoughts on new things for you - no photo library? Have you considered Immich, Photoprism? Also rtl_433 is very cool for receiving radio signals with a cheap sdr dongle. I capture weather station data and level of oil in my oil tank, but other things like tyre pressures also possible. I’d highly recommend getting into home automation- it will be you’re next obsession and can seriously improve your daily life! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lozsta · 2023-10-05 19:51 Thank you. That is super helpful. The all in one I think is too much for my needs I just want the download, I am running plex on the box already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- soapymoapysuds · 2023-10-05 21:35 NP. Just read the guide and follow the instructions as much as you can. You will basically need a download client(QBitorrent), Radarr (movies), Sonarr(tv), overseer and prowlarr. Those should be good enough. Once you connect them it works really well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 21:51 I use Nextcloud Photo Syncing and it works "well enough" (haven't noticed too many issues on iOS) I actually am learning some SDR in college right now which is super cool, I didn't even think of using it in a homelab setting! I have home automation on my list but because of college I can't do much right this instant :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeftBus3319 · 2023-10-05 21:52 Just set it all mostly up today, although I don't have *everything* setup, just the things I had behind Cloudflare Zero Trust, which is good to finally self-host my auth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fenty17 · 2023-10-05 22:06 Here’s a docker version of rtl_433 if you ever want to give it a try: https://github.com/hertzg/rtl_433_docker ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-05 22:24 Neither have i, there's just so much to it but i've really gotten a lot of help from this playlist [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH73rprBo7vSkDq-hAuXOoXx2es- 1ExOP](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH73rprBo7vSkDq- hAuXOoXx2es-1ExOP) with setting up passwordless login for instance.
