2023 Self-Host User Survey Results reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 10:45 Hi, r/selfhosted! Thanks to all who participated in our 2023 Self-Host User Survey! Below is a link to the results, which we've visualized using [Chart.js](https://www.chartjs.org/). Feel free to reach out with feedback on how we can improve next year's survey! --- [2023 Self-Host User Survey Results](https://selfh.st/survey/2023-results/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siranysparechange · 2023-10-04 11:51 Quite interesting stats, shout-out to my fellow kiwis I chucked at the automatic/manual updates question having a yes/no chart ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 11:57 > I chucked at the automatic/manual updates question having a yes/no chart Yeah, that was definitely an oversight when I wrote the survey questions. The feedback in the initial thread was to include a "Both" or "Either as needed" option, but the survey had received too many responses to go back and change it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheFlyingBaboon1 · 2023-10-04 12:25 _If you ever use containers to self-host, do you prefer manual or automatic updates?_ It seems this is not a yes or no question, but the results on the website report ~2/3 yes and ~1/3 no. Is this a mistake? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 12:33 > I chucked at the automatic/manual updates question having a yes/no chart I wish I could say that was intentional. Fixed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flyingvwap · 2023-10-04 12:42 Great job displaying those results OP! Interesting to me to see how heavily used Cloudflare is for custom domains. I started with Namecheap and moved recently to Porkbun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-10-04 12:44 Honestly interesting results but not too suprising where they fall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 12:48 I was also surprised at how dominant Cloudflare is. I'm wondering if some of those users purchased their domains elsewhere and just have their DNS servers pointed to Cloudflare. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- legrenabeach · 2023-10-04 13:04 It is interesting to see Jellyfin overtake Plex, but then I guess the selfhoster crowd would be, overall, more leaning towards a FLOSS solution, while the Plex crowd overall will include people who only host Plex and nothing else, and wouldn't be hanging around here to participate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bmn001 · 2023-10-04 13:10 There's no way there are more Jellyfin installs out there than Plex. I know the data is the data, but I find that one really hard to believe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JumpingCoconutMonkey · 2023-10-04 13:32 I'm interested in all the "other" responses for the off site backup question. Also, for the reverse proxy question, I'm curious what the actual breakdown is between nginx and nginx proxy manager. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 13:35 > I'm interested in all the "other" responses for the off site backup question. Same. I don't work in a technical field and was wondering if I was missing something obvious after seeing the responses. Unfortunately, this wasn't a free-form text question, so I don't have any details behind what services people who selected 'Other' are using. > Also, for the reverse proxy question, I'm curious what the actual breakdown is between nginx and nginx proxy manager. Nginx Proxy Manager and SWAG both. It may warrant its own question in next year's survey. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mystarkfuture · 2023-10-04 13:35 Are people using linuxserver/swag reverse proxy selecting nginx (because that is what it is)? Or are not that many people using it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 13:36 I assume people using SWAG selected NGINX. If so, Russia had 8 responses and can be found near the bottom of the third column in the dropdown table (countries are listed alphabetically). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jack_12221 · 2023-10-04 14:03 This isn't representative of all selfhosters, just the ones that keep up with the news. I've tried like three different "here's an easy guide to setting up Nginx" but have never been able to get it set up. I have a few services I'd like to make available remotely, but I know enough to know that without some kind of protection like a reverse proxy, that's a really bad idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- somebodyknows_ · 2023-10-04 15:03 Use caddy, you should find it easier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ST_Lawson · 2023-10-04 15:05 I'll take a look at that. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vrytired · 2023-10-04 15:14 Same, in fact I don't even understand the appeal. I initially tried to use NGINX, became confused, and switched to HAProxy. HAProxy seems to do everything anyone might want to do and has excellent documentation. Yet NGINX is vastly more popular. I feel like everyone else is understanding or seeing something that I'm not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Johnees · 2023-10-04 15:15 One question, people who answered that they use their smart phones for hosting. What?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-04 15:21 Interesting. Any questions in particular? My registrar is not the same as my DNS provider. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JL_678 · 2023-10-04 16:26 I think that people are referring to [Nginx Proxy Manager](https://nginxproxymanager.com/). While it runs on Nginx, it is much easier to use and simpler and can be configured with a point and click web GUI. I was skeptical until I tried it, and now love it. I use Caddy and find NPM more intuitive. Could that be your confusion? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- drizky · 2023-10-04 16:27 This is the case for me, I have 3 domains currently from different services and I manage them all through Cloudflare. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ST_Lawson · 2023-10-04 16:30 Possibly...I'll take a look at that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scurro · 2023-10-04 16:35 Surprised container use is so high or were they including VMs as a container? I have a dynamic DNS hostname at no-ip.com, which is hostname.ddns.net (not actually that, but use as an example). It is set up to point to my server at home and I have port 80 set to forward to the correct location (I go to hostname.ddns.net and I get the "Congratulations!" page for Nginx Proxy Manager). On that server, I have a number of services. Let's say I have one called "example" that is available at localhost:8000. I realize that I probably can't do something like example.hostname.ddns.net. I could maybe do hostname.ddns.net/example, although it sounds like that's not ideal. I've tried a few different ways of setting those up as proxy hosts, but end up getting errors (mostly 502). Is there a recommended way to set up that last one (hostname.ddns.net/example), or is there a better way to set that up? I do have an actual domain name, but it's through a regular hosting provider and I'm not sure how I'd get a subdomain to point to my dynamic IP address from that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- drizky · 2023-10-04 20:20 Maybe I can find a used or slightly damaged docking station that supports LAN + Charging over USB-C.. I think I'm going to dive in this, it actually got me interested now! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lvlint67 · 2023-10-04 20:23 Hostname.ddns.net/example can be setup with a location based procy_pass.. but it would be simpler to do Example.hostname.ddns.net You'd need a server directive with a servername line that refers to example.hostname.ddns.net.. and in that you could do a proxy pass to localhost:8000 https://docs.nginx.com/nginx/admin-guide/web-server/reverse-proxy/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FierceDeity_ · 2023-10-04 20:24 And you have to realize the pitfalls of the config language when you want to do anything more complicated than proxy_pass, especially when you want to start doing anything conditional ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lestrenched · 2023-10-04 20:34 HAProxy FTW! Such performance, such documentation! Love it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- legrenabeach · 2023-10-04 20:47 If you're referring to the Hetzner thing, I think they are blocking it from next week, not yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- manofoz · 2023-10-04 20:52 Are you forwarding the HTTPS port too, think it’s 443. I followed some ibracorp guide and it took me longer than the video to get things working. My main hang up was with the DNS entries. I use cloudflare for my DNS and I got my domain from squarespace or where ever it is Google domains directs you to, didn’t know what I was doing at the time. So I got my domain working with cloud flare but I didn’t know how to add the CNAME record. Turned out I needed to add two things, first was the prefix.mydomain.com “prefix” into one field and mydonain.com into the second field. I don’t have it in front of me so I don’t remember the field names. Then I thought the SSL cert from NPM -> let’s encrypt wasn’t working so I downloaded the cloudflare one and uploaded it into NPM but it only sometimes worked. Then I realized www. only worked for www.mydomain.com and not www.prefix.mydomain.com even though I added both into NPM so I just stopped using www and my problems went away. Now that I fumbled through it I can easily expose a port by adding a CNAME entry and then adding a host in NPM! My next challenge is hooking up Authentik for things I need access to but thats got a learning curve. I hear a lot of people use Authelia too but I have not tired that. I also am going to run Fail2Ban and look up what else is recommended for security. I have cloudflares firewall fairy strict and it lets me block by location so I squeezed that as tight as I could but if I wanted to travel I wouldn’t be able to access anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- manjerico · 2023-10-04 20:53 SWAG user checking in - picked nginx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-10-04 21:12 Containers are more efficient and if you know how to use them, more practical. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- timothyclaypole · 2023-10-04 21:14 Many, perhaps all, of the top apps presented here ship with a docker container option out of the box. Niginx can do a similar task, but actually a lot more too, but that’s more application specific as it can map URLs to specific files etc. So often it’s haproxy routing to many services and that might end up on an nginx server which is on the application level with a very specific config for a particular project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scary-Needleworker52 · 2023-10-05 07:21 Same! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_trev · 2023-10-05 08:22 I'm in the same boat as you. I've been avoiding them as I am an old school bare-metal stack build guy... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ncell50 · 2023-10-05 15:55 Oops. Then I must have confused the recent survey with yours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-05 19:05 I think most people using Nginx either deal with it during their day job, or are using nginx proxy manager. I use and configure Nginx a lot for work, and it is powerful. However on my homeserver i was running Nginx Proxy Manager and now Traefik because i do not want to do Nginx configuration when i'm quickly experimenting with something. And i'll never have the kind of traffic where Nginx really shines anyways. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ST_Lawson · 2023-10-05 19:23 Yeah, I'm just a web developer, so I don't really deal with maintaining/securing the web server myself. I'm the only user that would be using my system remotely, so I'm not getting a ton of traffic. I'm just wanting to be able to self-host a couple of things that would need to be accessible from the outside (nextcloud, maybe vaultwarden, etc.) and I want to limit the possibility of someone gaining access to my system. I know that most of those have their own login system, so just exposing the port would work, but from everything I've heard, that's not ideal and not as secure as it could be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- indykoning · 2023-10-05 22:19 Exactly, though so long as something is exposed to the internet someone could get access. Though running things through te same port might help against service detection based on the port and of course convenience. (e.g. if someone starts bashing ports on your ip address they'll only get a 404 because they do not use the right url) Especially if you're running most in docker i suggest Traefik, it's really easy to set up. And you do not even need to open the ports in docker (which means every service could run on port 80 without conflicts) I have Traefik with [https://github.com/hardillb/traefik-avahi- helper](https://github.com/hardillb/traefik-avahi-helper) installed alongside, it's useful for local prototyping without having to set up dns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-10-06 09:18 I run both, and always leant towards Plex... until recently. Suddenly Plex is not finding a load of new movies, I looked into it briefly, can't see any errors, permission problems, or naming issues.. Jellyfin had no issues... so we use what works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kingb0b · 2023-10-08 23:08 Thanks for posting the results! In the future, I think you should use bar charts instead of pie charts. It's hard for people to receive angles and slices but much easier to compare lengths. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfh-sted · 2023-10-09 10:23 I appreciate the feedback! I initially started with all bar charts, but decided to switch to pie charts for yes/no questions to break it up a bit. Maybe I'll just include both in the future? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kingb0b · 2023-10-09 14:23 You can do whatever you want obviously! I made the comment because in the field of data visualization, pie charts are almost universally disliked. You'll find many an article telling you to never use them haha. If you really want to use pie charts, I'd recommend using them only for charts with two categories. You could also label each category too so people knew what the percentages (or counts) were. Ideally though, the goal is to most effectively communicate the data, even if it seems a little boring at times (https://medium.com/@kennelliott/39-studies- about-human-perception-in-30-minutes-4728f9e31a73).
