Proxmox or portainer best suited for external disk and zwave dungle reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Osteduden89 · 2023-10-04 09:10 I have been browsing this awesome subreddit for a while now. also seen a couple of videos on YouTube. I want to learn , get experience using Docker containers. But I would like some advise on which software I should use for managing the containers. since my Linux command skills are very limited. I have experience from hyper-v mostly managed with GUI. Hardware that I have available is an Intel NUC i5, 8GB RAM, 120GB M2, 1TB ssd usb. Since I would like to host an plex container what is the easiest way to mount the external usb SSD drive with proxmox or just on an Ubuntu server on the bare metal? Also hope to replace my current smarthome hub SmartThings with Home assistant docker. Than I would need to USB passthrough an usb dongle for zwave/Zigbee transmitter. Read some people using proxmox for this but Maybe it also should work on Ubuntu and portainer? Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-16_account · 2023-10-04 11:48 Both are pretty easy. But if you're going for Home Assistant, I recommend VM, just because you'll be able to easily use the store in Home Assistant. Iirc, that's either impossible or difficult if you're running it in Docker. So yes, run Proxmox and Home Assistant VM, and pass through your dongle and you'll be good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-10-05 21:14 I use both, I run Proxmox as my hypervisior, and then I have a Debian VM hosting docker + Portainer. I also found a nice custom apps template to use with Portainer making it almost as straight forward as unraid.
