I want to learn how to host a server on fly.io. What course on Udemy should I take? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michaelscarn69- · 2023-10-04 07:46 I’m not from IT background but I can do the bare minimum basics when it comes to coding. Been on the internet for over 10 years and only discovered self hosting and open-source apps yesterday. Now I wanna learn how to host a server on the web and locally. Learning through the internet is pretty overwhelming and I don’t know where to start or what to study to get me well versed on this. Right now I only have access to Udemy courses. Can anyone recommend me(for a complete beginner) a suitable course to study this on Udemy? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plane_Resolution7133 · 2023-10-04 08:08 Do you have a old computer you’re not using? Install Proxmox on that thing. A tiny hard drive, and maybe as low as 4GB RAM will get you going. Get used to working in a terminal (command line). Then YouTube and Google if or when you’re stuck. It’s great fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vixfew · 2023-10-04 09:38 I wouldn't jump straight into managed services like fly.io. They hide all moving details away from user. Good if you just want to host an app asap, not so good if you want to understand how things work. If you have a spare computer, install Ubuntu Server on it, configure OpenSSH server, connect from your main PC. This is your server now. Figure out how to make things work as you go :) You can start by installing a web server (i.e. nginx) and opening that web page on your PC. If you don't have a spare PC, VM will do. VirtualBox for example, same thing, install server OS, connect with ssh, off you go ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michaelscarn69- · 2023-10-04 10:25 That’s very informative. Thank you. Reason I’m trying to use fly.io is because an application I want to use have gone open source and they had recommended fly.io to host the data in web server. Can you recommend an Udemy course please? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phein4242 · 2023-10-04 10:34 Start with linux essentials, and work your way up via linux system administration. Get some old computer for practicing. Once you get everything up and running on that, only then do you switch over to a managed host (if at all). If that sounds like a lot of work, yes, learning selfhosting has a learning curve. Its up to you if you are willing to take that curve. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vixfew · 2023-10-04 10:35 > Can you recommend an Udemy course please? No, I never used Udemy for learning stuff, just Google and spare time ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Michaelscarn69- · 2023-10-10 07:43 Thank you very much.
