Mail server recommendation only for receiving email reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 04:38 Hello all, Looking to either self host or use a free mail service only for receiving emails. Which would you recommend for a no headache experience? Thank you in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldManinTights · 2023-10-04 04:49 I have a few domains on Simplelogin.io works great ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-04 04:52 You need an SMTP and an IMAP/POP3 server. Postfix and Dovecot are the battle tested software that have been around forever and just work. If you want that, and your comfortable with Docker, I'd look at either docker-mailserver (lighter weight, no gui) or mailu (has custom web ui). If you want to experiment with very promising, but new software, look at Stalwart. Maddy is also worth a look if you want something light weight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 05:12 For custom domains, you need to pay. While I know that simplelogin is part of Proton, I would rather add them directly in Proton. But that is not what I want to achieve. Something like ImprovMX (did not try it yet) or Forward Email which I tried a few minutes ago but they requested a premium account because the network TLD is allegedly spammy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 05:14 I was looking at the awesome-selfhosted list and looked at Maddy as well. The thing is that I do not want to overcomplicate it. On the other hand, it might be worth investing some time in it as a future proof solution for other mailboxes that I would like to have self-hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DryPhilosopher8168 · 2023-10-04 06:06 mail-in-a-box or mailcow Both are super easy to setup and work flawlessly. Haven't checked both of them in a while but I guess they are still actively maintained. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-04 06:11 Just use docker-mailserver. I ran it at my last job, took a few hours to get setup and running nicely and I never had to touch it again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Im1Random · 2023-10-04 06:23 docker-mailserver ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarkChoomba · 2023-10-04 07:02 Look into Mailhog. https://github.com/mailhog/MailHog ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 07:14 It looks interesting and super simple. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 07:15 I was always intrigued about mail-in-a-box. I think that might be my next home project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kurucu83 · 2023-10-04 09:43 I used it for a long time and loved it. Then got scared for no reason and moved to Fastmail. But would definitely recommend it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Other-Technician-718 · 2023-10-04 11:47 I run postfix / dovecot in a debian VM. Followed the tutorial at workaround.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 11:53 Good stuff, even though my preference would be Ubuntu. Any either way, love the: Time. 2 hours to 2 days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redoubledit · 2023-10-04 13:06 [Simplelogin is open source](https://github.com/simple-login) and can be self hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ab3301 · 2023-10-04 13:08 Aah.. Completely forgot about that.. Thank you for the reminder. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vevt9020 · 2023-10-04 18:55 I would use cloudflare for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OldManinTights · 2023-10-04 21:00 It’s still cheaper than google workspace or any other option. I mean you could do it yourself for free via oracle free hosting and self hosted email script if you dead broke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Other-Technician-718 · 2023-10-04 21:42 the base linux shouldn't really matter as long as you know where the according config files are. I guess it took me a bit longer to have everything up and running including testing and troubleshooting (mistyping stuff, misreading things, skipping something and not noticing it... :D) and doing everything over several days at night after work didn't really help. Would I do it again? Sure :)
