The network drives are connected to a vm with my services running on it (Jellyfin, Airsonic, etc.). **The Setup**: This setup has worked great but i'm running out of space for my media (currently a 2TB dataset on a 4 drive (+cache disk) RZ2 8TB share on Truenas) . **The Plan**: I'm planning on building a dedicated media box and moving my services to that (god I love docker) and other services i run locally. I got some larger drives that should suffice for the media but my question is this: should I opt for the storage on the new dedicated media machine or should I keep them on the network share? I'm leaning toward moving it all over and having direct access and then using the network to back the media up in a zip archive or something. wanted to see if you lot had any insight that I'm not seeing. Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ericesev · 2023-10-03 15:07 >I'm leaning toward moving it all over and having direct access This is what I do. I figure no sense adding congestion to the network if it can be avoided. And one fewer network service that needs to be secured. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SillyMyDiddle · 2023-10-03 15:47 Thank you for your input and I'm glad you agree! Makes me feel more comfortable with this approach. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheRealSeeThruHead · 2023-10-03 16:24 I much prefer a dedicated nas device. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SillyMyDiddle · 2023-10-03 18:16 I would still have my NAS in this setup. Why do you prefer it out of curiosity? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheRealSeeThruHead · 2023-10-03 18:23 there's something nice about keeping compute and storage clean and separated. i often want to change one or the other but not both, even if i were to use the same hardware i would put the nas and compute nodes into different VMs on the same machine. seems simpler and easier to make change if they are separated
