Alternative to GoDaddy + Microsoft mail reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Average-Terrestrial · 2023-10-02 19:04 Hello everyone, I have a domain on godaddy just for email use, I do have 2 mailboxes, one for me, one for my brother. Basically a Professional plan and a Basic plan but I’m looking for an alternative because of the costs and because I don’t need anymore the Office Apps. Do you have any recommendations? I was considering namecheap or bluehost. Thank you in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zomphie_ · 2023-10-02 19:19 I recommend using Cloudflare for the domain name, or if you're not a fan, try Porkbun. However, Cloudflare sells domains at wholesale cost. As far as email goes, I use Google Workspace. I pay $12/user/month, but my plan is going up to $18/user/month soon (I believe it is). Keep in mind you can get a cheaper plan with Google Workspace. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Murky-Sector · 2023-10-02 19:20 Literally asking a hosted services question in r/selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jusepal · 2023-10-02 19:24 Infomaniak or netim. They both comes with free email while still being far cheaper than godaddy+its paid mailbox. Else just go with the usual cloudflare, porkbun or spaceship and host your mail somewhere else. Purelymail is just $10/year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-02 21:20 How much are you looking to spend? Are both accounts using the same domain name? How much storage space does your email take? How many emails do you each send and receive on an average day? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Average-Terrestrial · 2023-10-02 21:22 I’m looking to spend max 100$ year, both emails are on the same domain and we use our emails just for impritant stuff and work related stuff, for subscriptions and other bs we do use free gmails ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-02 21:39 Sounds like you could get away with the micro plan ($19/year) on migadu.com. You'd both have to share the storage space (5 GB) and emails sent/received limit but you'd have separate mailboxes with their own password, unlimited aliases, unlimited domains (if you ever need to add more or host other family or friends), webmail, IMAP/SMTP etc. The limits are "soft" limits, meaning they never delete or block your emails if you run over, but if you go near the next tier they ask you to upgrade. If you need more storage you can go up to their $90/year plan (30 GB) or you can look at mxroute.com who have more flexible plans under $100. One plus for Migadu (as far as I'm concerned) is that they're a Swiss company with French servers so strong privacy laws for your email, while MXroute is American. If that's not a concern then MXroute has more flexible plans. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Average-Terrestrial · 2023-10-02 21:45 Looks very good good thanks you, I was also watching protonmail ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-02 22:47 I haven't bothered with Proton because the extra protection they offer only works when emailing other Proton users. If you send or receive emails outside of Proton they're not encrypted anymore. The encryption also makes you jump through some hoops, for example you can't have normal IMAP/SMTP you have to use their app on mobile or install an extra "bridge" app on PC. Also I like to protect my real email address with aliases when subscribing to stuff or making accounts on shopping sites and the way Proton does aliases is also complicated. You have to make an account with a separate service (SimpleLogin) and use a browser extension or extra app to generate aliases. On Migadu I can just a wildcard pattern like `shoping-*@` and then make up aliases like `shopping-ebay@` or `shopping-amazon@` on the fly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Average-Terrestrial · 2023-10-02 22:50 You have been very kind in explaining all these things to me. Without your help, I wouldn't have known which to choose. So, thank you. I am convinced of the first option you recommended. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-10-02 23:37 You're welcome. Talk to the Migadu support if you have any trouble or questions, they've always been super helpful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wdrussell1 · 2023-10-03 00:26 Namecheap does mail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SammyDavidJuniorJr · 2023-10-03 01:46 MX Route’s lifetime plan but would wager it doesn’t last a lifetime. https://accounts.mxroute.com/index.php?/news/view/53/lifetime-plan/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s_yarrow · 2023-10-03 08:15 Move your domain to Gandi or Namecheap (simply because godaddy are scumbags, I don't think there will be any win on the cost) and your email to Migadu, as it's cheap and awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-10-03 12:22 This is the most genuine offer of a 'lifetime' deal I came accross (and the only one I gambled on). Also its not run as an average corporate but it seems the business really does exist to make their clients happy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- svjx · 2023-10-07 00:59 [Mango mail](https://mymangomail.com/) is a great option. Also made by two brothers.
