I don't really get the complaint. VLC has its own bespoke decoders, but most playback apps do not. It seems as if that's exactly WHY they allow you to use an external player if your device does not support it. In any case, I wasn't trying to sell you on Jellyfin really. You don't have to use it for any reason. I was just pointing out that the support you were saying didn't exist does, in fact, exist. Its just not a great experience in using it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pissmaster06 · 2023-10-02 19:03 The Jellyfin app would be much more convenient if it utilized the decoding method that vlc does, without any configuration. I wouldn't need to make sure than any user of my jellyfin media server supports hardware accelerated decoding, or help them setting up vlc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Temporary_Affect · 2023-10-02 19:07 You understand that the decoding method that VLC uses is VLC, right? Like, Jellyfin can't just use that. It's a software decoder, written from scratch, that VLC wrote specifically for their app. Maybe Jellyfin, too, will be able to write a bespoke software decoder for everything someday. They're asking for developers to help now. But saying that Jellyfin should just use a software decoder is, like, a much bigger ask than I think you believe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-10-02 19:08 If you were perhaps interested in helping create a Jellyfin API client library in Go it would be of great help to my selfhosted music client [Supersonic](https://github.com/dweymouth/supersonic) which has an open ticket for adding Jellyfin support that I have not had the time to get around to yet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pixy_Games · 2023-10-02 19:09 There is a vue client ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pissmaster06 · 2023-10-02 19:10 Not sure why they wouldn't able to intergrate the vlc decoder into jellyfin. The android tv player already had a libVLC option. Im sure they could ship the library with the android player by default. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Temporary_Affect · 2023-10-02 19:13 It's not that it's IMPOSSIBLE, it's that it's a tremendous amount of work. Depending on how the existing app is structured, it may very well amount to a complete rewrite of the playback code to implement a software decoder instead of the existing exoplayer library. Again, it's just a really big ask that not even commercial operations like Plex and Emby have done either. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-10-02 19:14 You can help them by running the git version, so you can report bug ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LawfulMuffin · 2023-10-02 19:25 "Look, self-hosting email is trivial. I just don't see the problem if it's not getting posted daily or an absurd amount of times. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- puppetjazz · 2023-10-02 22:51 Jellyfin is a great service to the open source community. If I were a developer I'd love to contribute. Alas, this reminds me to make a donation to the important foss projects we have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- duggum · 2023-10-02 23:04 My sense is that they'll be more welcoming than the average project... they're just excited to get new blood. It sounds like if you're willing to do anything at all for them they'd take it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eezyville · 2023-10-02 23:07 >I'm not a .Net developer so can't contribute but if there's anything related to Go. I can help. Well it isn't the same app but it's similar and I'm sure they won't mind the help. Check out [StashApp](https://github.com/stashapp/stash). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farcaculpa · 2023-10-02 23:16 It was the case for me with a 'Chromecast with Google TV' (non-4k version) Could only play after setting the player to VLC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hiren__ · 2023-10-02 23:21 I have it working, it took a bit of work but it’s manageable. There are good guides on YouTube also. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chaphasilor · 2023-10-02 23:36 Just start out with a bugfix or two! Take a look at merged PR, the changes are often very minor but still super helpful! Even a code review would support the devs, there are lots of open PRs that someone just needs to take a proper look at... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chaphasilor · 2023-10-02 23:39 You can be a developer! Many changes are very simple and don't require knowledge of a certain programming language. Someone contributing a small piece of code is much more helpful for the Jellyfin project than a donation. But of course donations are always appreciated ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Temporary_Affect · 2023-10-02 23:44 It's certainly true that Jellyfin doesn't have software decoding support for HEVC. So the device needs to support it in hardware. But as long as the device supports it, it should work. It you're confident that a given device has support, but it's not working, I think it's a bug. VLC uses a software decoder, I think, if there is no device support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dazzling-Reason-5140 · 2023-10-02 23:46 C# is an awesome language, and everyone I know in the space is upping their usage of it or has glowing reviews. Any experienced dev with C++/Java/any of that class of language can write c# pretty easily, I picked it up in a weekend. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chaphasilor · 2023-10-02 23:46 If you're into music, /u/UnicornsOnLSD and me are currently in the process of making [Finamp](https://github.com/jmshrv/Finamp) more feature-rich and beautiful. It's written in Flutter and works on Android and iOS, as well as potentially soon Android Auto and Apple CarPlay! If you'd like to help us, just take a look at the open issues and don't be afraid to ask any questions! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-03 01:16 ## Post Removed Hey, tadzoo!
