Dropbox-like frontend? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_cubest_cube · 2023-10-02 15:06 I'd like to have something to manage public downloads (and preferably uploads too) from my server. So far I've just used a directory on the server with NGINX directory listing enabled and that has worked reasonably well, but I'd like to upgrade some functionality. My requirements (in order of importance): 1. Can handle files and directories, directory browsing. 2. Preview images, gallery style. 3. Download directories as zip. 4. Storage in local directory, easy to manage manually 5. Downloads can expire after a set time 6. Data can be either owned by the service, or just linked from the filesystem, expired owned items are deleted 7. "Unlisted" items, probably with a long-ish random key in the URL 8. File uploads, uploaded files are not publicly visible, need an invite URL to upload. I tried looking around a bit, but couldn't find anything, but at the same time this feels like a really simple & obviously useful thing to run on a server. Did I miss something? I almost started writing the service myself (get some practice with Actix and Docker, you know ...), but managed to stop myself and not add yet another project to my ever growing list :-). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firestarter321 · 2023-10-02 15:26 Nextcloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DzikiDziq · 2023-10-02 16:13 Well yes, nextcloud is the obvious choice. But most of your points would be solved by something as simple as FileBrowser - basically explorer of the files with a setup scope for other users, with photo previews (altho not gallery, more like explorer), upload and download as zip is also possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_cubest_cube · 2023-10-02 16:34 I kind of dismissed FileBrowser, because it has features like file editing and deleting, that is something i very much don't want the service to do. I guess it should be possible to lock it down more, but I'd be worried I skipped a config somewhere and then someone will pull a prank on me by deleting all my photos :-/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_cubest_cube · 2023-10-02 16:35 Nah, too big and complicated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Firestarter321 · 2023-10-02 16:44 Of course it is as what you’re wanting is big and complicated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- txmail · 2023-10-02 16:46 Seafile: [https://www.seafile.com/en/home/](https://www.seafile.com/en/home/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Feeling-Crew-1478 · 2023-10-02 17:36 Run File browser in Docker and mount the volumes as read only. When done properly there is no file alterations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- carl2187 · 2023-10-02 18:30 Nextcloud is a basic LAMP app. It literally doesn't get much easier. Install apache. Extract nextcloud zip file to web dir. Install php. Install mariadb. Setup a dB user. Launch a browser to the site ip or name. Put in the database credentials. Click install. Done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Webshanks · 2023-10-02 18:42 Syncthing https://github.com/syncthing/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- proc-sysrq · 2023-10-02 18:58 What you're describing is fairly specific; your options are either off the shelf software like nextcloud or rolling your own. Given this, the question becomes: are you more interested in providing a service for others and yourself and want to minimize the amount of time you want to spend on this, or is it valuable for you to have exactly what you want with the exact footprint that you want, and take on the maintenance obligations of building that? Do you value burning down the rest of your task backlog or will you value the experience of developing something custom? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DzikiDziq · 2023-10-03 18:42 Well, I just checked and except setting the location scope for user, you can also grant/remove permissions for: Administrator Create files and directories Delete files and directories Download Edit files Execute commands Rename or move files and directories Share files
